No Need For A String…

For recalling important matters, I’ve found certain ingestible items can work just as well as tying a string around my finger… Yep, I’ve proven that for this rider, trapped in a non-riding mode for a few weeks, certain ingestible prompts can bring back a flood of good memories and good feelings about some of the more pleasant aspects and events in my life just as well as any of the more conventional memory joggers…

Community Coffee (with Chicory, of course)…
bbcode image

A regional brand of coffee found mostly in Louisiana, but on occasion I’ve found it in surrounding states as well (the picture above was taken in southeast Texas, for example). I’d taken that pic to send to Lucky13 more or less as an inside joke… See, Gordon didn’t actually drink coffee until Valkers kept staying overnight at his house, and naturally coffee first thing in the morning was a must… He slowly over time switched from sipping hot chocolate to having a cup of Joe now and then… until he, too, was eventually hooked just like the rest of us.

Troutdude had brought with him some Community Coffee with Chicory from his stomping grounds, and Gordon soon discovered he had a special fondness for that particular brand! Dennis started sending him packages in the mail of that delightful wake-me-up beverage, so the hook had been firmly set! Nowadays Gordon is… well, you can easily imagine… BTW, there is a story behind the Chicory thing…

During the war-of-northern-aggression, a naval blockade had been set-up around the entire southern coast to choke off imported supplies to the states in secession. Consequently, luxury items, like coffee for instance, soon became scarce so attempts to ‘stretch’ supplies were tried… Coffee in the New Orleans area, as an example, was supplemented with things like ground tree bark, leaves, or other cellulose materials, but a particular local root eventually found favor. So, that coffee concoction became known as Chicory because of the root by that name from whence it was ground and then mixed with coffee… Well, it apparently caught on, especially in the New Orleans area, and nowadays it is a local staple… It is just a wee bit distinctive, but frankly it has become a favorite of mine as well!

Milky Way Candy Bars…

A product of Mars… the candy company, that is, not the planet. Personally, I favor Snickers myself, but those nut-less treats are still quite good. They also happen to have been the favorite snack of my dear friend and serious riding bud Jim Dorman. Jim and I logged many, many miles together including a couple of ‘long rides’ across the country. He was sitting next to me at that motel in Calgary, in fact, when t-man403 walked up and introduced himself… and the beginnings of an incredible story all started… Now and then I’ll get a Milky Way just to honor Jim… and to recall some of the innumerable good times we shared…

Occasionally I even enlist some help… (That was the only one we had, so we split it three ways.)

Reminder of how I really am (Snickers bar)…

Yeah, I’m not quite like most folks… I am so ordinary in so many ways; however… I do have a few peculiar ways and preferences too. For example, I prefer solitude to being surrounded by people most of the time. I see myself as a stand-alone entity and not as half of a couple. I enjoy leisurely rides far more than spirited highly technical rides. I enjoy my thoughts vastly more than adrenaline rushes, and I’m usually in no hurry whatsoever… We’re all unique, of course, so perhaps that ‘oddball’ label is a bit odd itself…

Reassurance of ‘basic truths’! It speaks for itself…

Great memories!!! (Zero candy bar)

By no means were those ever a favorite of mine, but they aren’t bad at all. They were, however, the favorite of a girlfriend of mine back in the sixties; long before matrimonial bliss found this novice traveler on spaceship earth and completely redirected his orbit and entirely altered the trajectory of the entire rest of his life. She was a near-miss for this then dabbler in relationships, actually, and she did come mighty close to leading this naïve sampler to the altar.

A particular skill of hers was a talent, a special gift really, and for many years she was the benchmark by which all others were measured. I can’t be more specific here, though, lest I run afoul of the board moderators, so I’ll just say that I’m still reminded of her anytime I spot those treats, and I often enjoy one while thinking fondly of bygone days and ancient adventures… Yep, way better than a mere string secured to a digit any ol’ time!

What, no Paydays? Surely you have a story to go along with the best candy bar ever devised. I enjoy ( or I used to) a Snickers but I only eat them after they have been in the freezer for at least a day.

If we ever meet in person I’m going to have to ask for all the details of the Zero girl.

John,

I do enjoy Paydays also, and I'll pick one out frequently... Alas, no particular especially fond memories associated with that delightful treat, however, so no mention above... That, of course, could change on my next outing. As far as Zero girl goes, I don't mind bragging about that, but no names or identifying information... you know, to protect the not-so-innocent... Thanks for your comments...

Mike,

Yep, I tend to agree... unless I'm in on it myself, I'm not really interested either... That said... I don't mind at all recalling the experience!

Ummm, I don't recall ever having one of those, but they do appear worth a try! Maybe they're a local thing out your way, so next time I'm in the hood... Thanks for your upbeat message, too...

Another well written piece of time travel while "observations" made along the way!  cooldude

As for candy bar's, chocolate like Hershey's give me indigestion due to a med I'm taking but one I enjoy on an occasion is a Butterfinger but Reese's, oh hell yeah! I grew up on PeterPaul production line rejects before Cadbury took over. Nothing better than a Mounds. The dark chocolate, mmmm good!

I might have to dabble in this coffee variant as I believe I've seen it available locally. Pretty much a Seattle's Best #2 or #3 drinker for 11 yrs. but Starbucks Holiday blend was purchased at Sam's in October and I'm on my last 12 oz. of it. No I don't go out of my way to drink SB while out and about but I do if the craving needs to be satisfied. Tried our local Copper Moon and not my taste and cost more than SB.  Shocked Used to buy Millstone Foglifter but they soon became unaffordable pretty quickly after I started to drink coffee of a different taste level. Grew up on Folgers in a electric percolator and later switched to Maxwell House until I got my 1st. "dripper" though I didn't drink as much 11 yrs. ago but Millstone got me started on my absolute 6 cup daily kickoff addiction. Had a Keurig that was gifted to me but just too expensive for my habit but always brewed a good cup coffee.

I think Starbucks default coffee tastes burnt more than anything else.
A bag of their Ethiopian, though, is pretty darn good.

John,

Yeah, those signs got my attention too! Marrying up does seem to be the natural state of things for most of us... In fact, I've had a couple of temptations myself since my first and only foray concluded... Well, sort of complicated nowadays, but...

Still, I was truly alone for the first time to amount to anything after the first one ended, and I rather enjoyed the experiment. So much so, that I haven't felt any urges to return to that... When temptation to 'couple-up' has arisen, I've simply ridden off... and, in retrospect, I'm mighty glad things worked out that way. Nothing against it at all, but for myself at this stage of life... I'm content.

h13man,

Thanks for the compliment! Candy and coffee, anything really, are mostly matters of personal taste, preference, habit, and a few dozen other things. My parents drank Maxwell House, but I didn't actually begin drinking it until I was grown and started to work in an office... I eventually settled on Folgers and still do usually buy that... unless Community is available... Never got into the 'fru-fru' types at all, don't even care for Expresso or Cappuccino… Just a good ol' cup 'o Joe... black, hot and strong... 2-3 cups a day is about it for this lightweight...

Mike,

Don't recall ever trying Seattle's Best... by any number. Probably give it a try, though... although, I'm satisfied with what I do drink, therefore in no hurry to switch. As for SB, seems way too complicated to place an order and not appear to be a rube... I just sucked it up and ordered plain black coffee anyway the few times I've ever gone into one of their places. I'm a lot of things, but yuppie ain't one of them!

Whoa ! Coffee, candy, and BJ's all brought together in one cohesive thread. Only the best are capable of such feats. I bow to your achievements.  Smiley

Now for my take (definitely not one of the best). I love most chocolate candies. But, I've got to admit the ones gathered here are WAY down at the bottom of my list. A simple Hershey's bar does it for me. A Reese's peanut butter cup comes in a close second. I was introduced to coffee and cigarettes while serving in the USN. Luckily I gave up the smokes years back. But my coffee intake has never declined. Never heard of "Community Coffee". (Sounds a little socialist, by the way)  Grin  I'll have to check it out. When Brenda was the Starbucks manager occasionally she'd bring home 10 lb. bags that had went out of date. I couldn't tell you any of the varieties, but they were good (and cheap). Nowadays I'm resigned to Folger's Columbian.  Undecided Oh, the horrors.  Grin

Thanks for the stories Bruce  cooldude (I'll hang out with Mike when you tell the "story")

Rob,

Thanks a bunch, my friend! I always appreciate your thoughts and comments about non-political things (political stuff I don't read). No, as far as I know Community Coffee does not have any socialist connections, although I imagine some of the consumers of that unique blend might very well be of that persuasion...

I spent three years in the Army, but I managed not to pick up the practice back then... for the most part. Actually, my favorite cup 'o Joe of all time was given to me in Fort Hood, Texas, back in '65. I was on guard duty out in the field before dawn one cool, drizzly morning... Mostly I was standing around under a tree grousing about my plight, when I heard someone coming through the bushes...

It was my 'relief', and I was sure happy to see him... Even more so when he extended his arm and handed me a canteen cup full of piping hot, over-sugared and over creamed mess hall (tent) coffee. "Thought you could use that," he said as he smiled broadly. I took it with much gratitude and stood with him and chatted until I finished that surprise treat! I still consider it the best cup I've ever had!

Hershey's chocolate bars are among my favorites, too, although I do prefer the ones with almonds a bit more. Reese's I can take or leave... I also tolerate Butterfingers well. Oh, and I like milk chocolate better than the dark, consequently Almond Joy is preferred over Mounds, for example. As for the rest mentioned above, none are truly a favorite of mine except Snickers, but all have some connection to fond memories of mine, so...

Speaking of the coffee habit.  I got hooked early in life on Dr. Pepper.  I even wore out a spot in the driver's seat of a car as before they made cars with 13 cup holders there was no place to sit one without spilling it.  But I would buy one every morning on the way to work or take one with me.  That was until they started furnishing coffee and one of those Bunn coffee makers at work.  I started on the spot with the coffee.  Now it's hard to get started without a cup in the morning.

Terry,

Similar for me... I went to work for Bell Telephone after the Army, but I took advantage of the Coke machine in the ready room and passed on the coffee. It wasn't until a couple of years later when I began working in an office in Florida, that I backed into a coffee habit.

See, they offered coffee and hot chocolate in the breakroom, so I went with the sweeter selection... until they stopped offering it! By then I was already hooked on the social aspects of the breakroom, so... I then weened myself off of the tastier choice and onto the murkier fluid... I grudgingly used cream & sugar for a few years, then I weened myself off of that beginner concoction and went hardcore black... and so it continues...

Coffee, chocolate, and bacon...what a thread! First off that's kinda cool, the significance of the Milky Way bar in reference to your riding buddy, Bruce cooldude

I like most others, have enjoyed my share over the years of these three particular indulgences. Over time however, my tastes have changed as have my intake habits.
I love my coffee in the morning, but now I limit myself to 2 cups a day, and never after noon. I also drink mostly decaf, but still like the taste of a good dark coffee...this one comes as close as any decaf and is a constant in our house

When nothing but a real cup a joe will do, we keep some of this around from a local roaster in our little town

Chocolate - these days I stick mostly to a simple dark chocolate when the urge hits me, and as F6john suggests, its always better coming out of the freezer.

Bacon...here's where I'm likely to incur some wrath or ribbing from some here...I switched to turkey bacon years ago, and now actually prefer its taste to "real" bacon...especially on a fav of mine, toasted bacon and tomato sandwiches  Smiley

Randy,

I'm just not into the Starbucks experience. So many folks feel a need to 'show their sophistication' and demonstrate their 'with-it-ness'. It just seems to me Starbucks simply capitalizes on that quirk of folks by providing an expensive venue with complicated varieties of their main product to facilitate the charade. I don't need to show, demonstrate, or prove anything to anybody... Like you, I try to keep my focus upon the doughnut and not upon the hole... Besides, I don't think their product is particularly worth the bother either... I appreciate your comments and the compliment!

DDT

Mike,

Sensible choices, so not surprising a sensible guy like you would move in that direction! My sister serves Decaf at her house. While visiting once upon a time, she and I were having a cup and chatting... I asked her about her brew choice, and I posed the question, "What's the point?"

She responded that she liked the cup or two in the mornings, but she didn't like the effect caffeine had on her physically... Made sense to me, so I never ragged her about it again... You'll get no wrath from me on turkey bacon... Not my favorite, but I don't think it's bad at all... and fowl is less 'foul' than pork for our circulatory systems by a long shot! Thanks for the comments and thoughts...

A riding buddy of mine from years past introduced Community coffee to me when he visited his daughter in Memphis. She and her new hubby lived on Mud Island and there was a trendy store on the island that had the brand. Steve offered to share some with me and it was ok but I was not bowled over.

I used to think that there was no better cup of Joe than Waffle House coffee. Over the years there are times that I am disappointed in their offering and other times I am rewarded with the brew I so fondly remember.

Coffee with breakfast is a must have now but only at breakfast. In cold weather a cup at night with a snack is an occasional treat. My dad had coffee with every meal and with a cigarette after work when he got home. Even after he gave up cigarettes he still had coffee all day long. My mother much prefers a hot drink to a cold drink and has now switched to hot green tea. She likes the taste and the medicinal effects, while I can only drink it on occasion when I’m feeling off and want something different.

Seattle's Best started out as #1 thru #5 when I started drinking it in 09'. Then they decided to add names to it and now the names has numbers listed on the packaging also. My usual is Portside Blend, #3, medium roast. With careful shopping I can get it for $4 a 12 oz. bag and last about 2 wks. The uniqueness of Seattle's Best is the grind is finer than any other coffee off the shelf so to speak thus one may have to adjust the amount you use.

John & h13,

Coffee is such a personal thing, there just can be no one right choice... Whatever works for us individually is the best selection for any of us... Reckon that's why they might make so many different kinds? Starbucks, Seattle's Best, Folgers, Maxwellhouse, Community... I tolerate all of them, as most do, but like all of us, certain ones appeal more than others... Oh well, viva le difference!

Some of the nastier coffee is any that has sat out in a carafe boiling away all day, until you walk in.

Cream and sugar can hide the strength and toxicity a little, but holy smokes, it's like coffee supplemented with doses of Dexedrine (speed), Ex-lax (laxative), and just a touch of Drano.  Grin

Zowee.   I can drive straight through now (except for the bathroom stops).

Jess,

As is usually the case, you are right on the mark with your observation... You're also typically vivid with your usual novel twist! Thanks for the chuckle... I needed that this early Saturday morning...

John & h13,

Coffee is such a personal thing, there just can be no one right choice...

This is where I chime in ....... so is scotch!

Terry,

Again, as usual, you are on the mark, too, with your usually 'cut to the chase' analogy! I have noticed a preference for that beverage selection of yours and most of your friends up there... Quality anti-freeze, perhaps?

I once hosted a party at my house and offered a wide variety of refreshments. An invitee and I were at the bar, and I watched as he grabbed a bottle of Chavis Regal (I hadn't learned about single malt at that time), he proceeded to pour his glass half way, then topped off the drink with Coca Cola. He then looked at me and remarked, "I just love Canadian whisky."

I thought it odd at the time, but I later considered that perhaps he knew something about Canadians then that I hadn't yet learned... Good to hear from you, my good friend!!!

I was a big fan of Canadian whiskeys for most of my life as they were the smoothest for sipping then along came Gentleman Jack and have never looked back!  Grin

Bruce,
Reading your post sent my mind scrolling through some flavor attached memories too!

Biscuits and good sausage gravy remind me of days of my youth.

Buckwheat pancakes and sausage remind me of Kingwood, WV and the Buckwheat festival that is held in the fall and is usually accompanied by rain or snow or both.  Dress shoes are not advisable.

Fresh sweet rolls and butter (if you are extra lucky, home made apple butter) remind me of my grandmother and one of my aunts that made huge fluffy and very tasty rolls.  The sort of stuff that would make your tongue flap your brains out.   smitten

Jerry,

Ain't it so! Coconut pie for this picky eater is far more than a special treat... Hard not to recollect times with Troutdude and MitchO, especially at the Jubilee Cafe, plus the entire trove of memories associated with that always wonderful delight, biscuits 'n gravy! Bacon, also, triggers innumerable fond recollections, and prominent among those are the pounds of that gift from Above consumed at your house!!! You and I also sampled... what was it, bacon steak or some such, in Silverton, CO, in the bar, now cafe, where Bat Masterson is said to have left a bullet in the woodwork? Delicious memories preserved by delicious stimulants... Nice pairing right there... Reckon we need to go do some more, though... my memory sponge ain't near saturated...

Bruce,
The Lone Spur Cafe was definitely intriguing to me!  Bacon steak!  That Certainly was an interesting something I had never heard of before!  I would love to spend enough time in that cafe to see and hear that woman play that old piano.  Maybe someday I will.

Jerry,

Yep, another great example of unexpected pleasures stumbled across during unplanned stops... ya just never know! As far as that piano goes, seeing it did trigger some fond memories of my own... Napper and I stopped there a few years back and had a lunch meal. While we were dining and chatting, piano music suddenly filled the air! The gal tickling the ivory was actually quite good, and the music itself was entirely appropriate for that setting. We lingered a while and enjoyed that unexpected 'bonus' that came with our meal... Probably would be worth a revisit sometime, for sure...

I usually stay at Frisco CO most the time while in the Silverton area. There's a bakery downtown that does an awesome breakfast and we always get some kind of pastry to go. Their muffins got me started on my muffin habit.

No, not at all like that!  We were having breakfast.  The “bacon steak” breakfast was a 1/2 inch thick slice off a slab of bacon.  Of course it was served with all the proper trimmings, eggs, home fries, biscuits and sausage gravy.  Everything in that breakfast was really good and the sausage gravy was among the very best.  However, it is a very filling meal.  It pained me to leave nearly all that sausage gravy and biscuits sitting there but I was too full to venture beyond the 1 bite taste test that I felt just had to be done!  The thick piece of bacon was not as much of a delight as it sounded when I ordered it, but it was quite good just the same.

Bruce you just inspired me to seek out a favorite candy from the past - favorite maybe by reason of deprivation - Bit-O-Honey bars.  So I had a look on Ebay then Amazon - yep they can be found online.  So I ordered 10# of them for $30!  Delivered by the weekend.  Should be fixed for awhile.

Paul,

Jerry is correct... nothing like that on our plates. Not really a steak, per se, but a very thick slice of bacon...

Jerry,

Me too! A very large meal, indeed, and dining heavily early like that is not my usual 'M-O' at all!!! Still, something like that on a menu is hard to pass-up... sigh... Apparently that's something else we have in common...

h13man,

Been through Frisco many times, but I don't recall ever staying there... Oh well, that bakery sounds like a very worthwhile stop place! I know what you mean... The biggest problem with discovering great treats is the addiction that often comes with them!!!

Mark,

Congrats on the score! Can't remember the last time I saw any... never thought much about it, though, as I somehow managed to avoid any addiction to those. Yep, I'd say you're set for a while!!!
