I've agreed a price on a private sale bike. Out of state in South Carolina.

Owner does not have the title.

He tells me that the title holder, his bank, will send him the title 7 to 10 days after the loan is paid.

What steps do I need to take to ensure I end up the legal owner of the bike.

Bill of sale.

What else?

It's not a too good to be true deal  cooldude No scamdar alert.

I bought my 99 Standard in Kingsport Tennessee and the
Title was in the sellers Brother in Laws name.
He thought he could sign it but I knew that wouldn't work.
Bought the bike with a bill of sale and 4 weeks later he
came to North Carolina and we got it transferred to me.
While waiting my bike mechanic friend told me if anything
fell through he could put a mechanics lean on it and get
it titled to me no problem. Don't know how that would work
if the loan wasn't paid off though.

Hey Paul I bought a camper that was the same deal   I went to his bank and they told me yes it had a lean on it the price it was going to take to get the title and they also gave me a notarized paper stating that even though the title was still in the guys name it was my camper after I paid the loan off Hope this helps  this happen in Mississippi just make sure you protect yourself

I would go to the bank and pay, and then take possession of the bike while waiting for title.

I'd call the bank to confirm the story (they hold the title with their lien), before doing any traveling.  If they claim privacy silence, have him call and give permission to talk/deal with you.

Ask all your questions during that call and get everything sorted out before you show up in person.  Get a bank point of contact person you will deal with throughout.  I hate having to tell the same story to multiple different people.

I don't know if, once paid off, the bank must then apply to the state DMV for a new lien-free title to provide him (you) or not.  Or if they just provide the title with the lien on it, and their release of lien document to go with it.

Hopefully, you just have to register/title it once in GA, but if you get stuck applying for title and paying tax in SC, keep that tax bill to show GA when you title/register there.  Most states will give you credit for sales taxes paid out of state.

If he won't let you ride home on his plate (to return later), take your Valk plate with you (and don't get stopped).   Generally, a phone call will get you insurance coverage (I don't even have to call, for a while).

I wish I remembered all the details, but when I sold my yz-490
the fellow came with me to my bank and paid it off, so that
idea can work out...

as said, go to his bank and pay off the loan and get title squared away then, etc.

My kid bought an old 1982 honda for 600 bucks (worth maybe 900).  He bought it from a WI guy who NEVER titled the bike under his own name instead the title he got from the MN owner with MN title was still under the MN owners name but the MN owner did sign off on the title as seller.  The WI guy was just too lazy and cheap to put the title under his own name.

My kid sent into WI DMV the MN title and signed it as buyer no problems.  Basically, that cycle for say 6 months or whatever the WI guy had it NEVER had WI plates on it and the MN title was basically NO good here in WI.  Previous owner just be lucky he never got stopped by a police officer driving it in WI with no title or WI plates on it having still MN plates on it.  Kid ended up selling it for 1 grand not making 400 profit but more like 275 or so after paying WI title fees, etc.

Paul,

Have you succumbed to 'SmokinJoe envy' and are looking at a Wing? Or, maybe you're thinking in the opposite direction at a sport bike, possibly even another sport-touring ride... Whatever, I'm looking forward to pics, even more, to seeing it up close and personal out yonder someplace... Good luck to ya!!!

Paul , (and all others ) I do not want to p## on your parade. A mechanics lien does not apply to the automotive field. The mechanics lien was enacted many years ago in the construction industry.
When a company installed heat , plumbing etc , this was the mechanical aspect of the building.
The installation company would lien the building to be sure they would get money due to them.
The ploy (I have used it also) was used to scare people into paying their bill for work performed.
The word "mechanics lien" was adopted.

No GWing for me. There's too much "stuff" at the back of the bike with the seat/trunk.

I will most certainly be riding away on the bike with a bill of sale and a receipt for the full amount paid.

Does it look like this?     Grin

I rode a bike with forks like this, once.  You had to find a parking lot to turn around in.

With no front brake, and a worn out shoe on the back.

As you hit bumps going straight, the forks flexed bouncy, and you could actually get sea sick.

Once.

Getting more complicated than it should.
The sellers credit union isn't open Saturdays. I did check that.

I am going to Savannah just before Christmas and thought I could stop off on the way home to pick up the bike. But Christmas day is a Friday. The day I come home. Darn it.

In the meantime I did rearrange the garage so another bike will fit.

I've confirmed the loan number with his bank.

And amount to close the loan out.

I'll be getting a notarized bill of sale when I pick the bike up. A receipt for the cashiers check from my bank. Bike and keys.

Saturday is the big day.

Might be a chilly ride home with a bit of damp thrown in.

Bike does have heated grips.  cooldude and a big winter windshield. i get the smaller one as well.

Neither.

If I was going to go that route it would be another ST1300.

My guess now is an F6B. Because there's not too much stuff at the back of the bike. Still have Honda reliability.
Best of luck for a smooth transaction.

OK, you've eliminated the Concours, FJR, ST1300, Wing, and F6B.

The only bike guess not eliminated so far in this thread is my Harley guess.  So I still have a chance of winning.  Grin

But now I'm wondering if it's another KLR650 or equivalent?

I didn't see where he gave it away.  But my guess is a Valkyrie IS or a '14/'15 1832 Valkyrie.

I won't say he flat out gave it away, but analyzing his recent posts and some of the queries he's made, I'm 99% I've got it... Smiley

Edit to add - Ya'll know me, I couldn't resist.... I'm also gonna add I think it's blue, and in a town very close to the GA/SC border...

I particularly like the blue LED voltmeter. I have a similar one in green on my green Interstate...
