Digital gear indicator: any good?

I check my RPMs for a rough idea of what gear I'm in but am curious about this external magnetic shift lever indicator for about $20 US.
Does anyone have experience with it?

That's cheap the better ones cost way over $100. And you plug them into the wiring hardness (on GL1800)
Did you read how it works?
"A small magnet mounted on the gear shift lever moves past the upshift and downshift sensor as shifts occur. The shift signals are then sent to the display, where the current gear number is shown."
I wonder how accurate it would be

Looks like it is just counting pulses up and down. I suppose if you hit the shifter and the magnet passed the sensor, but didn't go into gear, you would get a false indication. The false indication would remain until you pulsed the indicator back to the correct gear. $17 including shipping. Give it a try.

Read this one I wrote.

I also just bough from China a different display. I'll try to post.
Either one you use, has the same 6 leads which you need to place into a connector, and match the proper wires together.
I like the new display better.

Thanks, GordonV, nice write up. I might go that route instead.

Just an FYI
My original thought was to put in the GW gear indicator switch.
Then a series (5th gear) of LEDs on my inner fairing, to show what gear I'm in. LED with a resister to ground, doesn't take or cost much.
