I just got the activation e-mail for my membership here, thanks Carl.

I looked around for a new member introduction section but didn't find one so I'll do it here.

I've been thinking about a Valkyrie for a few years.  I like the idea of the GoldWing drive train but in a lighter package.  I also didn't want one that was already pimped out and perfect, I wanted something I can work on - man did I find it.

I bought a 1998 Valkyrie, I assume it's a standard, I'm still learning the nomenclature for Valkyries.  The PO is an 80 year old in failing health who hasn't ridden it for several years.  It sat under a roof on the side of a shed with three sides open to the air for I don't know long on the west side of Florida.  The good thing is it's got 22K miles on it, it turns over.  I bought the proverbial pig in a poke.

I'm currently putting the front forks of another bike back together.  Once that's done I'll start on the RustyValkry.  If anyone has any interest in what I do to this bike let me know and I'll start a thread in the tech section. No matter what I'm going to have a lot of painful fun with it.

I got mine, a true "rusty valkyrie" 14 years ago. It is not rusty now,
but it sure was then... rusty dented drilled out mufflers, lots of other
rusty bits and pieces.

It's not rusty anymore and has been 75 or 80 thousand miles of fun... good luck
on finding all your parts, some stuff is pretty much dried up already...  cooldude

I've got a few pictures of the bike focusing on the worst of the corrosion.  Once I figure out how to post pictures I'll start my thread in the tech section.  Thanks for the welcome, it's appreciated.

I saw the references to Inzane.  I'll try to learn more about it and I'll see if I can make it.  Being retired I can do just about what I feel like.  By the time it happens I'll either have RustyValkry back on the road or . . . will have concluded it can't be resurrected.

BEFORE you attempt to turn over that Valkyrie flat 6 pull all the spark plugs. You can either put in a battery After having a good look at the wiring or pull the front timing belt cover and turn it over with a 6 point socket and breaker bar. Look at either purchasing a lift adapter or building one out of wood. Tech section and known Valkyrie problems are a good place to start. That first ride when she ready and the first time you decide to Launch-Again-Welcome to our sand box.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Bike turns over and all the lights work and the battery seems good, it's holding a charge.  I've seen videos of some of the home made lift adapters.  Once I get the bike out of the trailer I'll stick my head under it and see what's what about getting it on my motorcycle jack.  Who makes lift adapters that will work on my '98 Valkyrie?

The first 2 things will be cleaning the gas tank and pulling the carbs and cleaning them.  I noted the PO replaced the petcock, I'm not sure yet with what.  I also found a carb spring kit from Cobra so it looks like someone, there were only 2 owners, did some work to the carbs.  Not sure how that might affect the carb settings.

I found the owner's manual in it's place under the seat, a little worse for wear but still quite serviceable.  The tool kit was also there though a few wrenches seem to be missing and a few were added.

I opened the front master cylinder for a quick look, not good.  The clutch is not working so all hydraulic fluid will have to be well flushed and replaced but only if and after I determine the engine is good and get it running.  I also discovered the throttle is frozen, I'm assuming due to the cable needing lubed but time will tell.

It's possible the replacement Petcock is a Pingel (  https://www.pingelonline.com/ ) - it is what is on mine when I bought it. Then again - I might be wrong. Good luck with your project.

The PO had replaced both the front brake and clutch master cylinder covers with aftermarket covers, the aftermarket brake master cover had a quartz clock in it, the clutch cover had a change holder.  Both were in bad shape and I wouldn't have had them even when new.  I texted the PO a week or so ago asking if he could keep his eyes open as he packed to move and, if he found the original covers to let me know.

The PO pinged me yesterday saying he had found both covers as well as a third, round one.  He's sending them.  I guess I'll have to figure out what the round one is - unless someone here can guess.

I assume the round cover would be something, like the two master cylinder covers, that the PO removed to put on something aftermarket.  What's round on the Valk that an owner would remove to put something chrome in its place?  I'll know in a week or 2 but my interest is piqued.

Welcome!  Here's a quick reference on the different Valk models.  (Of course, anything could have been added or taken off over the years.)  I'm sure someone here could decipher your VIN and tell you exactly what you've got.

Standard (GL1500) - No bags or windshield

Tourer (GL1500CT) - Color matched hard bags and windshield

Interstate - Hard bags, trunk, fairing, different gas tank, radio, CB....

Ride Safe,

Mine is a standard to which the PO added a windshield.  I'm looking forward to working on the leather Kuryakyn seat and aftermarket leather saddlebags which need a lot of TLC.  It's always rewarding to bring back leather.

Welcome!

I didn't see it posted earlier, so here's where you can download a service manual for your Valk: http://www.valkyrienorway.com/download.html

If your saddlebags turn out to not be aftermarket, and are Honda accessory ones, and they're deformed, you can buy an insert kit here: https://leatherlidinserts.com/product-category/saddlebag-inserts/?_manufacturer=honda

I don't know of Kuryakyn making a seat for the Valk. Corbin, Ultimate Seats, and Saddlemen are probably the most common aftermarket seats. Then there are the customs like Russell. If you can post a pic, somebody will likely recognize it.

You can't directly upload pictures to this site. I had a lot of issues using the often recommended Postimages site. I opened a free account at https://imgur.com/ , another hosting site. Very simple to use and it has automatic links for message boards like this one that will add the right code.

I've been here for just a couple of years now, but there are members here from the beginning of Valkyrie production. If you can't find an answer to a question here, you won't find it anywhere. There are a lot of very helpful, friendly members here. Don't let the political arguing on the site get you down. Like life anywhere else, you'll have that right now.

Thanks for the link to the service manual.  The PO had a Clymer manual he gave me which is better than nothing.

You're right it's a Corbin seat.  I don't know how, in my little pea brain, I got from Corbin to Kuryakyn but I managed.

OK on the image hosting.  I've had to do that before, it's a PITA but it is what it is.

I consider the typical stuff that happens on these forums to be entertainment, won't bother me.

This is a test of an image hosting service.  "We shall see what we shall see." said Tweedle Dumb to Tweedle Dumber.

Well, it worked so let's see if I can paste the image instead of a link.

Nothing obvious for pasting an image instead of a link.  Oh wait, I guess it was obvious, at least for a thumbnail, I'll go with it for now.

Regarding Imgur, I already had an account so I figured I'd just use that but I couldn't get the app to work on my phone so I tried Imgbox which is working so far, we'll see what happens.

I think I'll pop over to the tech section and start a thread on the RustyValkry.  May as well experiment in the thread I'll be first using images in.

I hadn't heard, but I just checked and saw the new design. It appears that they've
nixed the plan to change it because of the negative responses. While looking I
saw that one of our loser politicians wants to revoke my license plate...

I'm not a FB fan either.  But a lot of people are.  The info there is very recent and there's a ton of posts from folks who love their adapter.  Frankly I wish they would all migrate to mewe - just like FB but w/o the data mining, censorship and privacy violkating.  FB can pound sand.  To put it politely.

I bought my lift adapter from Mark, and it's served me well. There whenever I need it, still there when I don't, but completely unobtrusive. I added a used center-stand after that, and no issues between the two. No need to remove for oil changes or pretty much anything else. Lightweight, so you'll never even notice anything while riding. Honestly, you don't even see it unless you get down and look for it, but it's one of the best things I've added to the bike.

Mark,

I got my lift adapter today. Man, that is some really nice work.

I'll be installing it as soon as I get my bike back from Bob. With all the work he's done, I'll probably never have to use it....

Thanks again, great product!
