I have an ATT with about 14,000 on it.  Still looks good, but I had some sliding issues on wet pavement, enough that it scared me into buying new tires.  I bought a set of Avon Chrome that have been sitting inside on carpet for several weeks.  Date codes are 0620 for the front and 2520 for the rear.  I don't think my current set of tires will need to be changed anytime soon.  How long does the VRCC brain trust recommend I can store these tires in a controlled environment before they would degrade?  It might be two years at my current riding pace before I have to replace.

If kept inside I would have no problem with 3 or 4 years.

I agree. A few years sitting will be fine. Make sure they’re not leaning on anything that might deform them. I would also treat them with armor all to help.

No to the Armor All.  It is not a protectant nor preservative. it will degrade the surface over time.

longer than u think if kept out of an ozone and sunny environment and not subjected to 90+ heat.   they need to be standing up and rotated 180 degrees every month during storage.

Yes, stay away from the Armor All as a preservative!

The main thing that degrades the rubber compound in your tires is the sun (at least according to my tire guy...yep, I've got a "tire guy").  Anyway, according to my tire guy, it's the lack of real rubber in the tires that makes them degrade that way.  He says they can also degrade just sitting in a warehouse, but not nearly as quickly as they do in the sun.  So, given that 2¢, I would think that tires being stored in a controlled environment would last somewhat longer than tires stored in a warehouse.

Nevertheless, one peace of mind option would be to sell the tires you have and then buy newly manufactured tires when you're ready.

You may want to consider how long you expect the tires to be on your bike.  Five years of tires on the bike make them marginal at least.  I would think if they've sat waiting for a few years that would reduce tge dependable time.  I wouldn't want o ride for long or hard on tires over seven years old.

I have never seen any testing other than from tire makers and their lawyers who want to sell more tires that they are no good after 5 yrs. and in todays sue happy economy, I don't think we will ever see an independent study.
there is plenty of safety factor built into a H tire designed for 130 mph and which is never used at that speed. my two cents.

Thanks for all the help.  Avon had a $60 rebate when I bought these.  They are sitting 5' away from me in my office.  I can look at them daily.  Who hoo.

If they were my tires  I would store them in black garbage bags until ready for use. I have a front Avon chrome in a garbage bag in my garage waiting for a bike to go on .
