If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Colorado Springs, CO

I live at about 6000 feet elevation.  I am going to be making some extended (maybe up to three or more weeks) trips to lower altitudes starting this Spring.  As far as I know my I/S was originally sold here in COS and is completely stock where the carbs are concerned, except that the "high altitude adjustment" has been done per the owner's manual and I have a K&N air filter.  My Trike Kit should be here within the next two weeks and I am in the process of tearing her down, so while I am in there I figure I should address this issue:  Do I need to be concerned about burning valves or any other form of engine damage due to an overly lean mixture caused by the lower altitude?  Does anyone know if Valks sold up here originally would have been jetted any differently?  From the factory??  By the Dealer??  How can one tell?   Would appreciate any information anyone has, especially from you who live up here and go to lower altitudes.  Thanks, Stan

I wouldn't worry my little (mine here) brain about it.

Probably no longer than you will be in different altitudes won't make a difference.

I have run my bike over 240K, all over the US, Canada, Alaska, and all the lower 48 states twice with no problem.   It came from the Midwest.

As far as jets go, they all came from the factory with the same jet installed.....

Trike it out and if it runs super lean, then jet it up.   Don't let little jets make you worry...

The dealer isn't going to change anything until the buyer of the bike has his name on the title.    That way, if a change is needed, the new owner gets to bite the bullet & pay off the mortgage on it..

Like RJ stated, I doubt you'll have any engine damage either.. The only 'high altitude' adjustment is closing the pilots 1/2 turn.. These engines tend to run lean with factory settings and tend to run better when the pilots are opened an extra 1/2 turn,,so,,you may experience some driveability issues such as stumbling if the pilots are left where they are.. It doesn't take much to change them, so, you could even do it when you get to the 'lowlands' if you have any troubles..
