I just had the dreaded Coolant dump because of colder temps in the garage. Got me to thinking. When is it time to replace the Radiator hoses? Bike is a '99 with over 100K on the clock.

I tried a search but got this back.

I had some coolant leakage some time back also. Mine was from the orings on the metal tube connectors. 150k on the original hose. (Probably just jinxed myself)

I live in a cold place, and on some vehicles especially ones with silicone hoses, when it gets -30 -40s leaks are inevitable, but T bolt clamps help a lot, I’m retrofitting the valk with new hoses and all t bolt clamps

McMaster Carr has some that have a removable bolt so you don’t have to take your hose off

The hoses last a long time. My 97 had a leak a few years ago at the thermostat. I tightened that clamp and it’s been good ever since. 174k and 23 years. The hoses look like new. I bought all the water pipe o-rings. Never yet needed them. I just ride clean repeat    Grin

My carbs are out right now and I was thinking about replacing the upper hose but its so pliable and looks like new. I just know when I get everything buttoned it it will start leaking.  Angry

While I had my carbs out a couple of months ago I went ahead and replaced the upper hose.  I figured that replacing that hose every 23.5 years or so can't hurt anything...sure was easy with all that extra room!

That's also my plan. I'm swapping stuff over from the Tourer to the Trike and the recently rebuilt carbs on the old bike are on the list. While it's all open I plan to change the t'stat to a hi-flow version of the oem unit, helps in warm weather and slow traffic...among other things. I also plan to replace the upper hose and debating about moving the temp gauge over as well, something I added years ago along with oil pressure and fuel gauge. With the I/S trike I won't need the fuel gauge but will leave that on the old bike since I'm swapping the tanks....also have an I/S tank on the old bike so the next owner will benefit from it with the gauge. Changing out the bottom hose is a bit of a pain, it's kind of a Y shaped thing that branches off to either side of the motor underneath. Not to be confused with the vertical hose that runs down the side of the radiator on the left with the chrome or SS coil cover.
