Google removed their app, it was Amazon AWS that shut down their cloud servers.

I'm not a fan of cloud, hope business leaders everywhere are noticing the risk you take if you move your business to the cloud, at a whim you can have your provider end you at any time for any reason.

And Apple got in on it as well.

Same S H I T we learned when covid first started.........  China is the sole manufacturer of too many important products we NEED every day, like drugs for example.  When/if China shut down production, we're screwed.

It's not just the people who manage your computers (The Cloud) it is *everything*...

Stripe Inc. will no longer process payments for President Trump’s campaign website...

The financial-technology company handles card payments for millions of
online businesses and e-commerce platforms, including Mr. Trump’s campaign
website and online fundraising apparatus.

If you had your own scaled-up well-maintained server farm and were able to
process credit cards yourself you'd still need to be connected to the Internet
some kind of high-throughput high-bandwidth way, I guess you'd have to
own that too in order to protect yourself from being cut off on someone's whim.

Who would have ever thunk that an American company would have to consider moving their operations offshore to protect free speech.....

Sad state of affairs they've put us in.

Can you guys clear up a couple terms for me. It's hard to understand any of this without understanding the simple things first. I think I understand the server thing, but I'm not sure. They are basically physical machines owned by companies that route our information flow on the Internet ? The cloud thing is completely foreign to me. The only thing I really know about it is my IPhone continually tries to get me to buy more cloud. Is it just memory banks that companies own to store our information versus us purchasing more memory physically ?

There is also a move afoot to

Pelosi And Dems Seek To Expel GOP Members For Wrong Think

Democrats Introducing Articles Of Impeachment On Monday

The left/ liberals were supposed to be the party that supposed to be all inclusive, obviously once they tasted power they let their true colors be known.

This should never be happening in the US, the constitution is being thrown out and we see many dishonor it.

Cloud is just somebody else's computer.

Instead of buying your own servers and infrastructure, you rent time on someone else's. Amazon's the biggest game in town with AWS. I'd wager at least 50% of the sites you visit are on AWS.

The nice thing is for a startup, you don't need to invest all the money up front to build out infrastructure, and if you get a sudden surge in traffic there's elasticity built in, you can just pay more and your footprint grows to meet the demand.

On the down side, you're putting all your eggs in someone else's basket. And, if you say the wrong thing, they can dump your eggs out on the ground and destroy you on a whim.

Computers need storage space and programs, sometimes companies offer storage on their own computers/servers. Like real estate you rent a apartment or house but its not yours, but as long as you make payments you can live there. The difference is in housing there are rules and regs to follow. Now with the cloud we see that there is no rules, so anything you have on the cloud can be taken or denied from the owners at anytime.

Hosting a website requires space and a physical address for people to find, just like a house so when a company builds a website and uses videos all those are stored in that hosting site.

Sadly another level of draconian censorship that stops you from paying for the any website is the stopping of the use of online payment services for specific sites.

Internet companies lobbied against and won lax rules in certain areas of their operations in effect the argument was censoring the internet would be wrong. Today we see it was a ploy to allow them special breaks that at this point should be taken away immediately. If the dems don't get thief way this will not change.

companies that route our information flow on the Internet

That part of the puzzle is exactly like what you pay for to get Internet in your
house. I get it with DSL from ATT. Lots of people get it from their cable teevee
company. Other people get it from satellite. You need a GIANT connection to
run your own web site (for example) that has a lot of traffic. So even if
someone owned ten giant warehouses full of servers to run their web
sites on, they'd still need one of only a handful of giant Internet service
providers to sell them access to the Internet that would sustain millions of
daily visitors.

Rocky Mount, VA

A small town just south of Roanoke has suspended two police officers for simply attending the rally in Washington DC last week.

This is an abhorrent violation of the Costitution.

To those left leaning individuals who see nothing wrong with this:

Sooner or later they will take away something that you do care about.

When that day comes there will be no one to stand with you.

Because, you so gleefully allowed those whom you disagree with to be silenced today.

I have NEVER trusted the "cloud".  All of my data is stored and sourced here.  Though I pay a company to host my web site, the home for my web site and data it is here.  If they were to pull any of this crap the lefty big tech is doing, I don't lose much at all.  I just have to find another host and load my stuff there.  Don't use the "cloud" for any of my personal data either - phone and pics and comm stuff.  Installed a 128gig micro SD card on my phone and back it up on my server with about 30 Tb of storage.  Unfortunately my phone is an Android so I don't do anything sensitive / private there.  I worry about accessing my bank accounts by the phone however.  And also use Square on the phone to accept credit cards.  Dammit I hate having to use Google anything.  I wish folks would boycott gmail.  You know, they mine everything that goes thru that ap.  Including email recipients who didn't sign up for it.  Popular because it's "free".  Yeah right.  YOU are the product.  "free" my butt.

Question:

Regarding email servers.  I use earthlink as my main email server (actually its Mindspring from many years past with dail up services).  I do pay for the service.

In the opinion of those here, what is the most "secure" email server?

I have been using gmail for "junk" traffic.

Unless you're using PGP or some other point to point encryption, none of them are secure at all. SMTP is an open text, very easily intercepted protocol.

So they're coming after the first, ay?

I don't know John's mindset (probably very high) when he wrote it, but it sure is timely.

Take heed.  If rights and freedoms are on the table, what else is there to lose?  People who think there is nothing left to lose are dangerous people indeed.  Don't tread on our freedoms.

Sounds a lot like "Newspeak:

The intellectual purpose of Newspeak is to make Ingsoc-approved thoughts the only expressible thoughts. As constructed, Newspeak's vocabulary communicates the exact expression of sense and meaning that a member of the Party could wish to express. It excludes secondary denotations and connotations.

In so doing, Newspeak not only eliminates "unnecessary" words, but it also promotes a narrowing of thought and, therefore, awareness. ... Through his creation and explanation of Newspeak, Orwell warns the reader that a government that creates the language and mandates how it is used can control the minds of its citizens.

In the world of 1984, Newspeak was created by the totalitarian overlords of Oceania, with its fictional leader known as Big Brother, in order to actually limit free thought and free speech. In totalitarian governments, those in charge try to control every aspect of citizens' lives, even down to personal habits.

The purpose of Newspeak is not only to be a medium for the ideas and worldview of Ingsoc; it is also meant to make all other ways of thinking impossible and thus remove all heretical thoughts. At a point Winston writes in his diary that he understands how but not why.

I've always said that 1984 is the scariest book that I have ever read.

Now it is playing out before our eyes while many of the fine Americans quietly eat their Soylent Green.

Wow I can see the lawsuits now very bad.

Apparently as companies were shutting down their services for Parler, they were making press releases. The company that handled 2FA and security, Twilio, shut down service yesterday, and this left a massive security gap.

 Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Thread: re Parler hack for real this time. I know, I waited to verify it, and it's bad. Effectively any image anyone uploaded to Parler has been compromised, including driver's license verification photos, and photos with raw metadata connected to accounts (location, camera info)

For small-medium sized business, being in the cloud is basically a requirement. Especially a SaaS company. All of the companies I help run are cloud-based. It just doesn't make economic sense to host your own servers, hire your own I.T. staff, etc.

My engineers can focus on writing software instead of maintaining servers and infrastructure. It just doesn't make sense from a business and technology perspective NOT to be cloud-based if you can be. This all depends on your business, of course. In my SaaS world it really is the only option.
