You're inspecting the copper nubbies in the start button. The copper nubbies bridge the headlight contacts in the start button when the
start button isn't pressed in (default position). By design, the headlight circuit runs through the start button to shut off the headlights during start up, so forth.


Bad bridge .....

..... or the headlight wires are frayed and hanging on by a few strands.

If you've never taken the start button apart, a nylon box houses the start button and the stationary contact plate.
Just release the 4 barbs from their 4 slots to separate the parts.
