Forecast for Sunday is Snow! We haven't had much snow yet here this Winter, only one time just before Christmas and it only lasted for 5-6 days. This past week has been very nice weather, and today in particular was spectacular, if not a little cool. With the Valkyrie still up on the lift getting a good cleaning of the underbelly after getting a new rear tire and servicing, it was the old Wing again for me. Sure am liking this having a second bike thing, haven't had this luxury in decades!
With the temperatures only getting up to around 4-5 C with our second bout of Winter weather on its way, I finally broke down and put the shield on the Wing...I've loved bombing around full on into the wind since I got this bike, but it's been getting a little too "refreshing" the last few times out. Coming down from our little mountain, the ditches and the beaver pond already had a skim of ice but the roads were dry and clear of frost and salt...and that sun,,,oh Yes, that glorious sun was out in full force Cool

My cold weather riding gear consists of my heavy 30 year old leather jacket, leather vest, heated vest, and then a set of thin Merino wool undergarments under my t-shirt and jeans. My feet and hands don't really get cold so my regular boots and gloves work well. One extra bit of comfort I've found this year is  a pair of my wool soccer socks with the feet cut off, pulled up on my arms...makes quite a difference. They also work well protecting the pipes on the Valk when working on the back end, and are a good conversation starter when the jacket comes off in the coffee shop Smiley

After a quick stop in town to run an errand and grab a cup of coffee (well, it was going to be quick until this old guy (mmm...he was probably only a couple years older than me, so I guess that makes me an..... Wink) comes running out of the coffee shop to talk to me as I'm starting the bike. Something about old Hondas...just like when on the Valk, most stops seem to produce this type of occurrence. Turns out this fella was a Kawi mechanic for 30 years, and actually pulled out some photos of a couple of 70's vintage kz's he was currently rebuilding. Wound up shutting the bike down and chatting for 30 minutes.

Once underway, spent a good couple hours riding the backroads of the valley. The shield makes a world of difference taking the blast of cold air off my chest and the need to hold on a bit at speed, and so it also inadvertently increases my speed by 20-30 kmh on the straightaways. Having just received a speeding ticket this past Fall, I gotta take it easy and be a good boy for a while.

One final stop at Kilby beach, just 5 minutes from home. This fabulous beach is on the Harrison River, and is a favorite spot of ours to come for a BBQ or fire, a swim in the Summer, to fish, or for a relaxing evening with a good book and watching the sunset.

It's also a great place to watch the trains wind their way along the river and over the bridge. Love watching trains, would spend hours as a kid on our beach on Kootenay Lake watching them roll along across the lake. Just the fact that they've been around for so long and are still such a relevant fixture on our landscape makes them interesting. Growing up in a fairly remote "behind the times" place, I guess it's the fact that I always use to think about where they were headed and where they came from, and what kind of wonderous things could possibly in all those cars, that held my attention. Now, i just finding it really relaxing to watch them roll on by.

Yep, it was a nice day for a ride Smiley

Beautiful country, sometimes it's just good to get out and ride. Always seem to run into someone who wants to chat about motorcycles, or discuss memories from when they used to ride. 40° F is not too bad, I can dress for that, any colder I pass. I have no heated gear.

Mike,

Twisting a throttle and carving a curve are great fun, as we all know... However, I view those as more of an appetizer or dessert item, with the spiritually liberating aspects being the main course... I do find all of your rides and descriptions to be quality reading; I especially like the way the 'message' of your posts draws me into the experience also... 'We' did indeed have a nice ride, didn't 'we'...? I'm sure looking forward to wandering back that way... and soon too!!!

Do you know the Relive app?

If not, it's free.

I did slip out yesterday for a very short 60 mile ride around the Basin.  Not as cool looking as your ride, lots of pastures/fields around the area with some snow covered hills in the background.  Stay out of the hills due to frost and ice.  It was 39 when I lifted my leg over the saddle and somewhere around 40 when I got home an hour and a half later.  Lots of slow secondary/farm to market roads.  Got in some zig-zag practices cause several patches had had cows move down the road.

Don't have heated gear just layers.  Figure at 40 and direct sunshine can stay out for a couple of hours.

Suppose to get white to day and for the next week.   tickedoff

Sure enough, it's snowing here this morning, looks like it's gonna sock in for a bit. Makes getting out yesterday even more gratifying.

Tundra...yes, I actually never get tired of talking to strangers who initiate conversations...especially about motorcycles!

Jason and Bruce....I sure hope both of your plans to make your way out to this neck of the woods work out for you. Maybe I''ll try to make a few more posts about riding and fishing to further entice ya Smiley Sure hope the border opens up before Spring as there's some US destinations we'd like to get to this year and of course, getting together with some of our good American brothers and sisters that we missed seeing this past year is at the top of our list of things to do.

Britman...yes I've tried the Relive app I think it's kinda cool, but for just local rides I like to try and describe the day in written form, as I enjoy doing it. For my next longer ride I thunk I might  try  the app...think it would make a good  a record of the actual routes taken.

Skinhead....yes, the Christmas train has been part of our annual holiday tradition for many, many years .The Mrs actually won a seat on it for one of the legs through our local region  one year. It actually rolls right over this very bridge....we gather with a few neighbours here every year with a bonfire on the beach to watch it go by. You can see it coming through the trees along the shore for several kms before it hits the bridge. Quite spectacular especially on a calm evening, with all the lights reflecting in the water.

Mike, very nice ride indeed!
It looks like that windscreen on your Goldwing is pretty substantial, I especially like the way it flares out for some hand protection in the cold wind.
I noticed your bike doesn't have the adjustable air shocks, right now I have sitting in the box some new seals and Progressive Springs waiting for installation on the rear shocks of my Wing. It'll ride like a new bike once I install those.

Are those the OEM mirrors? The fairing mounted mirrors on mine are too loose to really hold a good adjustment and I don't like the look of them anyway. I've been looking for some good ones that I can mount on the handlebars.

Ya, it's amazing the difference that shield makes...its actually just the right height for me to deflect the wind but still see overtop as well. But I still prefer riding it completely naked...a nice alternative to my Interstate. Think I'll keep in on for the rest of the Winter though. Yes I believe the mirrors are OEM. I'm the 3rd owner of the bike. PO is a local MC mechanic who bought if from the original owner about 5 years ago. He went through it thoroughly doing the carbs, new stator, etc, and replaced the worn out OEM shocks and exhaust. Other than that and a set of lower bars (which I much prefer) it's otherwise stock.

That's a nice Wing for sure, I'm going to find a set of mirrors for mine that aren't cheap chinese made.. OEM's would be good. My exhaust pipe on the left had battery acid drip on it so there's no way to make the pipes look good. It's not sticking out like a sore thumb but the problem is there. Overall I'm happy with the bike and what it can do, it's certainly not a Valk yet has it's own positives it brings to the table.
