I remember a large storm in 1985 cut sections like that out of roadways and railroads in West Virginia.  Many towns were completely cut off from electric, phones, and any drivable access route.  Several people were “swept away” and the “final count” was just an estimate.  River beds relocated themselves.  Some fertile farm lands became just piles of rocks.  It was a major disaster and took years to be rebuilt, ...... some of it never was rebuilt.  That was the largest flood ever recorded there.

In the past there have been interesting warning signs on that highway referencing rocks in the road.

Those signs take on more meaning when riding the highway and you round a curve and the rocks are still rolling across the highway.
