I used to host my pictures on computers at Clemson. They changed how they did things several times, causing all of my (all of everyone's) pictures to disappear *poof* from posts on social media. I got tired of that so I started hosting my pictures on google sites. They're changing it around, so soon... *poof*... The scale of what's going to disappear is staggering to me... google "site:sites.google.com bluegrass"... all of that will be gone soon. google "site:sites.google.com honda valkyrie"... all of that will be gone soon. No more https://sites.google.com/site/valkparts/Pick any interesting word you want, there's probably web pages about it on google sites... *poof*... Everyone who has a/some google site(s) is free to make new ones the new way, but I'm outta here... I've downloaded most of my images and soon (I hope) I'll have my own virtual internet connected host running linux and my own apache web server... I guess that it will only last as long as there are virutual internet connected hosts and apache web servers... -Mike "it won't be free, hopefully it won't cost very much..."

First, they want us all to put our pictures online. Then they change things like they are telling us - "we find those pictures are too expensive to do"......

This is part of the reason I haven't moved out to the country yet.... I've got a fiber optic Internet connection to my house, with 5 static IP's that are mine (As in search InterNIC for them, and they're assigned to me by name). I run a VMWare two node cluster with NAS devices for storage, and host my own e-mail, WWW, DNS, etc. etc. etc. (Yeah, Apache on Debian Linux for the WWW, although I went with a non-Exchange Windows based solution for e-mail, I like to dabble all around in different areas. (hMailServer is anyone's curious) Every (non-phone) digital picture I've ever taken is online on my site... Another nice thing, whenever I'm signing up for some businesses thingy and they want my e-mail address, since I host the domain I just throw an alias of WhateverTheBusinessNameIs@serk.net in there. I can get their stuff when I want it, but #1 because it's unique I can tell when/who sells my address, and #2 if it gets too spammy I just turn the alias off...

I'm out in the country where s l o w 1.3 mbs download dsl is the best I can get.
I'm going to start as simple as I can and hope it doesn't cost too much...
Ironically, I'm going to start out with a google virtual host, since I've done a bunch of gcloud bash stuff for work...

Two things.
Thanks to some input from Serk I now have my on NAS, just the beginning but all the stuff that was on the "cloud" is now there.
I still use "standard" email addresses, ect.
I sort of live in the country but, luckily for me, the local Electric CoOp was running fiber for substation control (that was their story) and since they had a pole on my property, I got access to the fiber network they were setting up for "customers". Its 100 Mpps (well right now it is 65.65 down and 59.40 up) but that is the lowest I have seen when I checked. The 100 Mpps is the lowest speed they offer.

I can relate, and I really felt your pain. Until a couple years ago when they finally upgraded this ol' hood with high speed radio internet. I started noticing some homes had little 6" mini dish thingies popping up, and was so happy to discover they were high speed internet receivers. I got rid of the old dsl lickety split, and now I Pee TeleVee and have sufficient download speed to stream 4k content. This is not satellite internet, but local ISP bandwidth that jumps between several towers to reach our hidden rural neighborhood.

I am using an old emergency backup computer that is so noisy I cant record videos on streamyard
To my delight I found a $hit-ton (that is a real legal type word) of old pics including from various powwows and trips that I thought were lost and I promptly put them on a flash drive
So now when my new laptop arrives I will still have a whole bunch of my pics (YAY !)
The reason for using this old thing is my home puter does not recognize my password which has always been my password and I do not have a backup startup disk The thing says welcome then right back to enter your password ARGGHHHHH
Fortunately most of my docs are always in the cioud
Oss
Unfortunately some videos that brother Strider had made way back when were lost when that hosting site died
I am so jealous of you folks who can make things happen with these computers I guess we all have different skill sets

I reckon there's about a million things I still need to figure out, but here's a picture being served up from the apache server on my "new computer": I doubt the IP address is static. EDIT: it should be static now... -Mike "that's sunset in my back yard this evening"

<Awesome pic of I'm assuming Hubcap's back yard>
Just waiting for Starlink to catch up, and I've got my 18 acres out in the country ready to build a house on, flip off the city and their code restrictions and move out there... ...hoping CoLo is good enough by then I can move my current servers to a decent, reasonably priced alternative, but we'll see.....

Guess I am sort of old school. I keep all my files on my laptop, which are backed up on a thumb drive. Haven't used any cloud services. The pic's I do post are copied to the site when I want to post the pic.
In the past I used a tower that I built so I could play games on it. Latest and greatest stuff. Now I just used the laptop to visit here and a few other places to read what is going on. Big change in the last few years.
I do have the laptop password protected with a user (me) and a separate admin. Got the camera and mic turned off. Just don't trust folks I guess.

I bought my domain name - only around $13 a year... I paid for it for the next five years. I associated my gcloud IP address with it, so: http://www.hubcapsc.com/misc/sunset_feb_1.jpgAs of yesterday, all the pictures on my sites.google.com web pages are downloaded to my laptop, and I'll not bother copying them to my new web-server host until I'm convinced I've done the things necessary to make it persistent - I'd hate to do a bunch of work on it only to have it all disappear on the next reboot or something ... Anywho... soon (I hope) when I post a picture here, it will be hosted on a web-server that I control, not someone else. -Mike

Another name for the cloud - "somebody else's computer".No doubt about that. They run it. Back it up. Fix it when it breaks. All I have to do is type "dnf update" and keep my software at the latest revision. My hierarchical well organized directory of files with meaningful names lives and is maintained on my laptop, the stuff on "their computer" will be a copy. I'm confident enough that it is going to work that I'll be posting all my new pictures on it. My pictures won't have trackers and my web site won't collect cookies And there are cartoons on my front page... http://www.hubcapsc.com/-Mike

Swoon. But that is for riding fun, not spending weeks setting up a new system for me. Which I wouldn't understand anyway.
