So, I guess the PO removed the stickers on the rear shocks. I see an arrow on one and nothing on the other.
1. How can I tell what setting they're on?
2. How do I know what setting they are in when I adjust them.
3. Is the adjustment made CW or CCW?
I see nothing in the shop manual.

You can move it in any direction, there are five positions, since it is just a pre-load adjustment maybe you could measure from eyelet to eyelet to make sure both are at the same spot then go from there.

Someone will probably chime in with a better idea, but looking down on the shock from above, turning it clockwise adds numbers. If you turn it until it "bangs" loudly, it is now on #1. If you turn it CCW it should stop turning at #1.

Looking at the notches at eye level, you'll notice they move higher in relation to the bottom of the shock. The highest or farthest from the bottom is the softest setting, i.e., lowest preload. The lowest or closest to the bottom is the stiffest setting.

No bike here, so I can't look. I remember those holes going all around on the IS, so you can get the lever tool in and turn the shock.
All I can help with is that there is 5 positions. I would turn it one way till it stops, counting. Then back the other way counting. This would give you the 2 end positions, 1 & 5. Which one? Maybe you can figure it out from what John said, or Valker as one way you can keep turning it around and around, but the other way is stopped at the bottom (you can either go from 5-1 or 1-5, but not both).
I've set mine to the stiffest, and usually ride 2 up. Have never changed them since I got the bike, I never notice a difference, and we where both over weight for the bike.

I have my shocks off right now (issues with nail, worn out tire). Went and looked at the shocks, no notches. Just the label showing the number and an arrow pointing to number. By the way mine is I/S.

I'm with Spidy3, where are the notches?
I have my shocks off right now (issues with nail, worn out tire). Went and looked at the shocks, no notches. Just the label showing the number and an arrow pointing to number. By the way mine is I/S.
I don't see the notches either. I'm sure the notches or "steps" are inside for the preload. But with the stock Showa's I can't see them. Maybe with better eyesight I could see them thru the holes ? |
