Hello all, I would like to temporarily remove my charcoal smog canister. I have read some threads and it looks like I need to plug one hose and leave the other vented. I do not have a strong understanding of the system and wonder if someone could tell me exactly what to do to remove it so that the bike still runs well. Here is a link to the diagram and if one could tell me which number lines to plug and which to vent I would appreciate it. Also any other tips on this process are welcome. https://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/1998-honda-valkyrie-gl1500c-evap-canister-ac/o/m151423sch40839I am not getting into a full desmog anytime soon but need this out of the way. Thanks for the help, Matt

Its been a while since I did a desmog on a CA bike, Looking at the picture, #8 is coming from the tank, its a tank vent, it needs to be open at the bottom with the other lines. It also needs an open "T" closer up to the tank. #9 could be plugged, its for the vapors from the canister to recirculate back through the pair valve system. Hope this helps, you should consider doing a full desmog.

Thanks for the reply I appreciate you looking into it for me. What do you mean by an open T closer to the tank?

Yours likely has it. It’s just an air break in the vent line to keep from sucking in rain water. If not, it’s a simple T like Savage’s diagram. You can get them at a hardware store or auto parts.

CA models didn't have the "T" or air break in the tank vent, the line went into the charcoal canister to capture all the vapers, the vapors from the canister recirculate back into the pair valve system or into the airbox. Once you remove the canister, its just a good idea to put one in the line.

Got my tubes and going to put in the new vent tube with open T.
Do I need to remove the tank to slip the new vent line on the bottom of the tank?
Thanks again for all the help guys, Matt

No, you can just unbolt it and lift it a little in the back.

Just out of curiosity, why remove these items? Is there a performance gain? It certainly cannot be a weight advantage, and most all of it is nearly hidden from view. PLease save the flames thank you.

I think the canister keeps him from using his lift adapter.

It would be wise to unscrew the petcock lever from the body of the petcock before lifting the back of the tank. If you put stress on it, it’s fairly easy to accidentally snap off that machine screw inside the body of the petcock. Only takes a minute to do properly.

Thanks guys!
I am just removing the cannister to use the lift adapter and putting it back on. I will look into a full desmog later.
