So the wife has a new metal detector and I want to find a way for her to learn to use it.

We have some old 1/4" rebar laying around the house that I can cut up and bury randomly around the property so she can learn to use it.

The questions are:

Bury the rebar vertically or horizontally for the most effective test.  If horizontal, how deep, a foot or less or more?  If vertical, how deep would be too deep for easy detection without giving away the location.

For horizonal burial would a piece one foot long be sufficient given the depth recommended above.  What about vertical burial?

It is my intent to bury about 100 pieces around the property for her to learn to use it effectively.

Bury the rebar in Mexico, see if she can detect her way home.  coolsmiley

Get a piece of 8" galvanized pipe. Any hardware store would have it. You might even have some around the house.

Put it in your pants.

Walk by her when she's out using it the detector.

Sorry, someone had to post this.

She might find stuff without seeding the property. Turn it on and go for it.

I can think of 10 funny responses to this. (but I'll spare you)

I can guarantee my wife would have required a more devious plan to get her out of the house for long periods.  Like shopping.  Grin

Before I buried (test) metal all over the place, I'd just do a small known plot (easy to find) to gain skill in operating the machine correctly. (at least to start)

There might actually be interesting stuff to find out and around the property, and having dozens of chunks of rebar out there kind of runs interference in finding it.

Here you go... If you or your wife haven't watched this yet, she might pick up a few pointers Wink... and  be entertained by one of the better shows I've  watched in a long time. Lots of subtle and intelligent humor and interesting characters... and all about metal detecting. Wink
I think metal detecting is a lot like flyfishing.... just being out and about on your own with the peace and quiet of your own thoughts, and where the hunt is generally more rewarding than any treasure found  cooldude

Detectorists takes a little time to warm up to but it's worth the wait.

It's a 3 season series. I watched the first two on Netflix Canada..it's no longer on there....maybe on the US Netflix? I believe the 3rd and final season is still on You Tube for free. If you're into just a nice, gentle and witty (British) humorous show with great music and characters and without all the loud and obnoxious crap or crass humor that most shows offer up these days, it's worth renting as well. Like Britman says, it might take a bit to get into it at the very start, but give it a chance. I've watched each season multiple times, and still pick up subtle things I missed the first go around. And...it is all centered around  metal detecting, so there's that too cooldude

Found it on Amazon with commercials.  Have watched the first three episodes.  Wife sort of likes it.

The Jiffy Peanut Butter Commercial was "different".

My only suggestion is to have her bring it to my place, having just done some renovation and construction, I keep finding things I don't want my tires to find.  Yes, she's very welcome to come here.  Wink

I suspect that this is a fishing expedition as I don't think you would go to all the trouble and dig holes and bury stuff in the ground for her to find.  Take Britman's suggestion if you are serious.  There are most likely many targets already waiting to be found.

Ok........

I was trying to be "not obvious", with my question, because this is a very public board.

And I sort of was fishing for information, again without asking a direct question.

But it is obvious I missed the mark and I apologize for that.

I have since done some research on the web found some interesting things that I will try and let you all know how they worked out.

Of course you do know that detecting on Federal or State land is a BIG no no. I believe it's difficult to even get a permit.

Unless you are looking for the Confederate gold in which case I've got my shovel packed and ready  cooldude

I do a little metal detecting myself and you certainly can find alot in your own yard. If you want to set up a test plot , do various coins (pennies , quarters , dimes , nickles ) lay some flat and some on edge , various depths too ( 2" to maybe 10") also try some steel washers , some brass , pot metal and aluminim (especially some pop tops removed from the can ) so she can tell the difference between the sounds and how to play with the discrimination setting (if it has one). She can always re-bury the stuff , knowing then what it is and being able to know the tones each one will generate. If you dig on someone elses property always get permission and most of all return it to as close of condition as it was...I usually let them know that it will leave some small marks , but within a week they will never know anyone was there.I also try to leave a little part of my find from their propert with them (a coin or 2 , a small metal toy that may have been theirs as a child goes a long way ) Beaches are my favorite because they virtually leave no trace of your prescence , I also found an almost brand new $200.00 Nieman -Marcus necklace on the beach  my wife's birthday...she thought it was a lovely gift !!

Take that piece of rebar or an old broom handle, punch it into the ground, pull it out and drop a penny in each hole., gently backfill.

Thanks all for the advice.  I was thinking big and I should have been thinking small, especially after watching three seasons of the Detectorist.

Wife likes the series.  And it is educating to a degree.

I did tell her that one and she did laugh but she had a bigger laugh about the suggestion to put it in my pants.  Cheesy
