Riding home this morning bike died on I-5 and had to have it towed to house. While waiting for tow truck I tried numerous times to restart with no luck. Bike will crank and is getting gas from the smell of it when turning on the choke. Just went over 100k miles and getting ready to take care of some maintenance. Just rebuilt the petcock and do believe that is not the problem. I suspect the ignition system but will know more once I get time to look at it. How easy is the alternator to remove and rebuild? Thanks to all in advance

If it just died with out warning, I would say it’s electrical. If it still cranks it wouldn’t be the alternator. If that went bad the battery would be dead. Check for spark first.

Check this simple thing: it is possible for the kill switch to be rocked to half way on and half way off. My bike died once when I was 10 miles down the road... turned out I had kind of bumped the switch to that half way place doing maintenance. I never use the switch so I didn't think of it until after some head scratching...

Check your lean (tilt) censor. It will kill the ignition if you were to fall over. Maybe went bad or fell over.

If the engine is turning over when you press the starter button, it is not the Kill Switch or the Tilt Sensor. Charge your battery and try again. Valks need full voltage at the battery to start.

Check for whether or not you are getting spark, then let us know!

Jump it to your car (engine of car not running). If it starts it’s probably the alternator. If it was the battery but the alternator was good it would not have died. But, the battery will need a full charge if it’s still good.

Also check to vacuum operated fuel valve. Pinched vent tube could be pinched. Could be so many different things with seeing the bike. Lot of good advice to get him started trouble shooting problem. David

Problem solved. Found the vacuum line to the fuel petcock had come off. Should have checked this when I was broke down. 12 hour night shift and tired just wanted to get home so did not check anything my bad. Should of, could of, would of. Life is good. Thanks for all the good info and advice.
