The Dr. Made A House Call…
Well I’m having a very enjoyable ‘Dr.’ visit… Lots of fond memories involved with that, and with that also comes heightened expectations for those similar future events sure to follow down the road. I don’t ordinarily feel that way about anything ‘Dr.’ related, but that first time things were not at all ordinary… not in the least.
I’ve never really appreciated those rather unique visits in the past the way I have come to actually look forward to them now… Yes sir, if I had my druthers, these would become the more typical association… Alas, that cannot be, so I must content myself with the infrequent interludes of this sort and be content with that.
As is usually the case, the origin of all of this ‘specialness’ has to do with a certain friend of mine, the unexpected, random occurrence we shared once upon a time, and it has continued since… Indeed, I’ll speculate right here and right now that it will likely happen the very next time we meet!
I’ve known and been fortunate to have benefited greatly from several fine doctors over the years, but none have made a lasting impression on me quite the same way this one has… Yep, Dr. Pepper has easily become my most favorite of all ‘doctors’. It hasn’t always been that way, but that intervening incident I spoke of has vaulted all subsequent occurrences into the number one spot on my hit-parade list.
I actually met Josh at the InZane in Billings, MT. He was co-riding with his dad, Terry, and together they have become known as the ‘Cilley Boys’ from Wisconsin. We’ve crossed paths at some other gatherings since, including the ‘Yooper Gig’ last summer. It was on that last event that this special item really hit home with me and registered as a big thing.
A group of us were standing/sitting around swapping yarns the way we do at such events, when I noticed some movement in my peripheral vision off to my immediate right… I instinctively turned and looked… It was Josh with a Dr. Pepper in his hand extended in my direction… “Thanks, bud, don’t mind if I do…”
Following that generous offer, we had occasion to jaw some ourselves, and I began to get better acquainted with this remarkable young man. I found him to be engaging with an easy manner, a quite pleasant way about him, and a positive outlook on things, especially scooting around the country on the back of a Valk with his dad.
Yeppers, I will never again see a Dr. Pepper quite the same way I used to. They have joined the pantheon of common items that hold special and incredibly significant memories for yours truly, always triggering nostalgic thoughts. Josh has now joined those others I always specifically look for at gatherings and enjoy finding. Funny how simple or ordinary items can become beacons of iconic proportions and represent such important reminders of the people or things that are really important to us in life…
I’m enjoying a Dr. Pepper as I write this. I don’t ordinarily have any sodas of my own here at the house, but a unique opportunity arose the other day (a long story) and I wound up with this one. I’ve been saving it for a special occasion, so I could fully savor all of the specialness associated with the experience. Thanks, Josh, this 'Friendly Pepper-Upper' is being happily consumed in your honor…
DDT
P.S. I don't know if Josh has a handle yet... As an interim suggestion, I think I'll start using 'Doc'... for now, anyway, pending his agreement and acceptance, of course...

Hot Dr. Pepper is a delicious and soothing beverage as well. Pretty sure that's a custom mostly enjoyed in climes much further north than yours. I'll bring along a thermosful if you get this way for a fall colors ride sometime... Well hoist some in a toast to life!

I had to read up on the “Pepper Upper” to remember their history. I had vaguely remembered them going broke years ago. I’m glad they made it. I’m not much of a soda drinker anymore. They started giving me heartburn years ago and I gave them up. Maybe drink one a month or less now. I always liked Dr Pepper though. Even though my family and I originate from the heart of Pepper country Texas. Most of the family were loyal Chevy drivers and Coca Cola drinkers. As kids we only got them with our own money. I usually splurged for an Orange Crush. I guess they quit using the period in Dr. a long time ago. (I never even noticed till today)

I don't drink them like I used to, but I was prone to have one with me every morning on the way to work. That was until they started furnishing coffee at work gratis. That's when I started drinking coffee, what being a poor telephone employee and all. I acutually used Dr. Pepper as my CB handle back when I did that in the late 60's. Here's a link to the Dublin Texas Dr. Pepper info, their secret was that they never took away the real sugar and did not switch to high fructose corn syrup like the other bottling companies. Serk that might have been the reason for heartburn if you didn't get the original. I even found that I could go to their website and have those real sugar models shipped right to your door for a small fee. Sometimes you can find them at your local Piggly Wiggly Bruce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Dr_Pepper

Randy,
Ummm, pretty versatile stuff! I'll keep that in mind... Looks like you might become a 'go-to' resource for all things regarding liquid refreshment! You seem to have rather extensive experience with the subject...
DDT
Jim,
Yeah, he is something! Ross also gave a rather glowing endorsement of the Cilleys (all) at the Yooper thing. He singled out Josh, though, and he told of having Josh do some work at his 'cabin' in the north woods. A good worker and good company... Yep, his parents can be and are quite proud of that youngun!
DDT
Rob,
Yet another thing we have in common! I went through an Orange Crush phase myself! As for the heartburn, I've never experienced that from soda ingestion... Raw onions, on the other hand... I still love them, but they've turned against me in a major way... Well, except for Vidallia onions, it appears. Other 'family traditions' and tendencies in your background remind me of my own, also... Hope Brenda is still speaking to ya after the 'work assistance' episode you recently posted about...
DDT
Terry,
Yep, I imagine many, if not most, telephone veterans began their coffee addiction, or at least increased it considerably, while 'on the job'! I know I did! I've always liked the 'Pepper', but it's only been fairly recently that I've begun to see it in a whole new light!!! Planning on posting a story about yours and Iris's recent adventure...?
DDT
Terry,
You and your bride are fortunate indeed, but like is usually the case, much of your good fortune is due to your own actions... I'm looking forward to Noah riding up solo and being introduced! Naturally, I'm also looking forward to chatting with Josh again, too. OK, it'll be good to jaw some with you, as well... As for me being a favored 'Patient', well, I'm really looking forward to the benefits of such a lofty status!!! See ya in a couple of months...

I have taken many rides to Dublin, Texas and the Dr. Pepper store/plant, which no longer makes Dr. Pepper due to a patent infringement. Our good friend 5-19 (TJ) lives there and used to ride a Valkyrie but is primarily on a BMW adventure bike now. It's worth a stop to visit and see how bottling used to happen, plus to enjoy a carbonated beverage with real Imperial Pure Cane Sugar.

Scoop, No apologies necessary... we like what we like, and we don't what we don't... Different strokes for different folks, and all that jazz... I'm with y'all, though, on the diet thing! I suppose I have some sort of 'auto' aversion to all things labeled 'Diet', so products of the Dr. are no exception... Heck, don't even 'like' those diet things I haven't tried! Perhaps I'm going to need to go lie down on some Dr.'s couch sometime and get to the bottom of that... Mark, While I've ridden through Dublin a couple of times, I've never stopped by the 'facility' there... Heck, I've never paid much attention to such things of any kind. Same with Shiner, TX, for example... I like the beer, I'm just not much interested in the details, I reckon... An exception would be the Tabasco Plant down in the swamps of Louisiana... I didn't know about the pure cane sugar vs. corn fructose non-switch either... I reckon I'd just assumed they'd followed the crowd on that score... Easy to chat with, full of tall tales and funny personal anecdotes, as well as just being a good guy... Been a few years since our paths have crossed, but he is one of those memorable characters prominent in the colorful, diverse, mosaic tapestry that is Texas... sort of like you, come to think of it... Mark,
For sure! That sauce plant does produce an olfactory extravaganza! I had no idea all that went into the making of that stuff... sort of a blending of serious, complex chemistry and incomprehensible, mysterious alchemy... Oh well, like with all visits of that type, it did prove to be worthwhile... Perhaps in the future I should be more like you when it comes to undertaking such discoveries... probably not, but who knows...
DDT

Ron,
If the Cilley boys make it, a Dr. source just may be readily available! You'll have to provide the other mixer ingredient, however. Yes, Saturday is a very special day... one of seven in each week, as a matter of fact...

Dr Pepper reminds me of my Grandmother. After Granddaddy passed I would stop on Fridays for a visit and about once a month she would want me to take her to Burger King for a Whopper and a Dr Pepper. It seemed a real treat for her.
I don't drink sodas or eat fast food much unless I'm on the road. The rare occasion I visit Burger King... I get a Dr Pepper and think about those visits with my Grandmother.

I get it, man! The Dr is but one of many iconic items that trigger fond memories of special people and events important to me... to the point any visit to a convenience store nowadays almost always means a 'trip down memory lane'! Of course, that's a good thing, as it does keep the memory of important items fresh in our recollection archives... Next time you have a recollection 'visit' with yer granny, tell her we said Hi! DDT
