200,000 km, never had this issue since I got the bike 20 years ago. Had it off the road for a couple months over the Winter while I did oil, rear drive, air filter, etc. Even after having the tank off I fired it up once a week to run it to operating temp as I always do through that time. Took it out for the first real ride for the day yesterday, and it took about 30 - 45 seconds of on and off cranking to get it to fire up fully choked. Once started it ran as usual when choked, and idled fine after I took choke off. Continued to run and idle fine throughout the day, and started first crank at least a half dozen times after stops... one being over an hour long. Took her out again this afternoon, and the exact same scenario again. Battery is kept in a tender when off the road... reads about 12.7 Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thx.

Might want to try starting it without the choke on.

I would add some chemtool B12 to the gas and if it continues, jump it to hour car battery for a first start of the day. If the jump makes a diff you need a new battery

Ya, that was my first thought, but the battery reads OK. It is getting on in age, so I guess it could still be an issue. I will jump it tomorrow AM.

I think it’s your battery. Mine reads 13.25 at rest. (Unless it’s the wax, like Beardo says)

12.7 seems low for a Valk battery. If you can, try testing it while cranking. I'm guessing it drops quite a bit, if it does, you need a battery. You can always try jump starting it from a non running car to see if it starts faster.

I've experienced the "Start issue" due to a weak battery...bike cranks perfectly fine, but won't start. Mine would crank and crank, but the instant I let off the starter button, it would start right up, run fine...etc. Would not have known about this Valkyrie quirk if not for this site! The discussion thread was a while ago and is probably in the Old Tech Archive somewhere.

I'm with Beardo on the wax diagnosis either in the carbs or on the wiring harness. Wax will make the electrons slippery and they fall off the wires before they get to the starter. Dusty

Left it on the smart charger last night and it fired no problem this AM. Battery reads 12.5 V, then 11.75 V when ignition is turned on, then 9.5 V when cranking.... and then 14.3 V when bike is running. That seems more or less normal... or am I mistaken? I guess I'll just order another battery regardless... usually get at least 6 years out of the Yuasas... this one's only about 4 and a bit old. Otherwise she runs great... beauty day here today, so heading out for a long ride. Those coats of wax she received over Winter are just fine Beardo and Dusty And my first real test of the new Avon Chrome on the rear was fantastic!!

You are mistaken. It should not read that low. The 14.3 simply means that your alternator is working ok. That 11.75 and the 9.5 shows a bad battery.
