I watched it a couple of years ago and it is certainly worth another viewing.

Me and RNFWP are probably going to stay at Muscle Shoals on the
first night of our route to Hattiesburg...

We have been through there a few times.  First time by accident (have seen a lot of places that way) and the next times because I could.

We have never stopped there, just passed through.

The last time was with a friend and his wife riding with us.  It was a surprise (did not tell them).  When we got to the motel his wife looked it up and it turned out some group she knew was there that day.

Which motel?

I picked Muscle Shoals because it is a good place to jump on
the Natchez Trace and because it has some motels... I wasn't
planning on reserving a room first, though... The Key West Inn
is a park-at-your-door that advertises $72 rooms and is right
on 72... we'll almost certainly try there first.

This is pretty much the route I put into the BFGPS, it seems a
good way to cross over from Georgia to Alabama and the
time google puts on it seems good too. Joe told me about
going through Huntsville... it looks like the kind of place
I'd avoid, but the main road through there is wide open
and virtually free of wal-mart zones...

OK let me know where you end up at. I want to ride up Mt Woodall (802 feet!!!)the highest point in MS on the Friday morning. It's a forest road but I've been told it's in good shape. 1 mile long.

Maps has decided the link I saved for my route just isn't good enough and it gives me a route taking me up to Knoxville, Chattanooga and interstates. Grrrrr.

Day 1 via Little River Canyon

West to Cherokee, Bryson City, Murphy, TL Hwy 60 to Blue Ridge

TR Hwy 76 to Ellijay     TR by Chick Fil A     TR Hwy 382     TR Hwy 136

CROSS Hwy 411     TL Hwy 225 to Calhoun   TR Hwy 156

TR Hwy 27 to Summerville     TL Hwy 48 to Menlo    TR Hwy 15

CROSS AL State line TR Hwy 35       TL Hwy 176 to Little River Canyon

TL Hwy 11      TR Hwy 68     CROSS I 59     TL Hwy 227

Cross TN River     to Guntersville     TL Hwy 431     TR Hwy 69

TR Union Grove Rd           TR Hwy231     TL Hwy 32 by Maw Maw diner

TR Hwy 36     TL Hwy 40     TR Hwy 67     TL Hwy ALT 72

Britman, map link works on my laptop. Maggie Valley to Little River Canyon to Guntersville to Key West Inn.

I've heard of the music scene in Muscle Shoals but haven't seen that video/documentary. We have prime, I'll check it out... thanks for the link  cooldude

Hey Britman... your route looks good. Misses Rome and Fort Payne.

Gotta ask, is there a reason not to visit Fort Payne?

I'm rethinking my route.

Rain here Wed and below freezing Thurs morning will lead to ice at higher elevations where there's any water runoff.

That will delay my departure and then I'm going to head south to Clarkesville, GA and across to Dahlonega, Dawsonville, Cartersville, Cedartown, Cheaha to end up in Clanton, AL.

All dependent of course on my departure time.

I made several routes, it might be wise to swap routes and
come back on the trace... it gets warmer and still the weather
looks un-rainy...

This takes two easy days and is the middle of nowhere.

You probably have a lot of experience sneaking around Atlanta...
What is the traffic like on your route between Tate GA and
the Georgia Alabama line?

I still want to come back via Muscle Shoals to Mt Woodall and the Fame recording studio.

Tate to the state line is a mix of 4 lane and 2.
