I was just reading an article about a plan in the 60’s to use nukes to make a new canal thru the Israeli desert. I think they calculated it would take 500 bombs. (I wonder how long we would have glowed ?)

Was reading about this yesterday, there's somewhere around 30+ 156 ships being held up by this.   They are bringing in a "special" team to try and get this ship ungrounded and open the canal back up.   This is going to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Want to bet on the Captain being relieved?   Doesn't matter who was at the controls or what the cause was.   Someone is going to lose their job.

Quote
A total of 156 large container ships, tankers carrying oil and gas, and bulk vessels hauling grain have backed up at either end of the canal, Egypt's Leith Agencies said, creating one of the worst shipping jams seen for years.

The ship is the Ever Given, owned by Japanese firm Shoei Kisen Kaisha and wet leased and operated by the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine.

daprez and I discussed this "situation" and determined as an "accident" Very Low probability of being That. daprez and BonBon have been on a Lot of cruise ships and I served 2 years aboard a U S Navy Aircraft Carrier. The 3 of us separatley have encountered high winds at sea and while docking. I have lined the rail more than once while The Carrier was being docked. I've seen fixed wing aircraft crab while landing on a shore base-sideways a bit to the wind but still acceptable as per Navy Regs. While that container ship DO have a Lot of sail area I am Skeptical at best about it Just being an accident. They-ships owners-have stated repeatedly the ship Never lost power. And linig the rail for maybe a dozen dockings we NEVER hit the quay hard. And-discalimer-I wasn't there and I am Not a Ships Captain nor am I a Ships Pilot. But on the other hand far Too Many red flags. RIDE SAFE.

I was aboard the USS Saipan LHA2 in 1980 when it lost engineering and blocked traffic south in the Suez, albeit briefly.  We lost air conditioning first, then all electrical power. Tugs pushed it aside until they eventually fixed it, but we sat waiting until the next direction change. I want to say every 12 hrs they alternated direction of shipping traffic on that narrow stretch. We made it to the Indian Ocean, but I'm sure there was some press coverage that we never saw or heard about.

That deployment left in August, hit way up in the fjords in Norway (got our Bluenose for crossing the Arctic Circle), then through the Med, through the Suez, IO across the Equator (got our Shellback) to Diego Garcia (got to snorkel) to Mombasa, back through the Suez, Med, 12 days in port (Barcelona) for Christmas, then conducted joint helo operations with the Tunisian UH-1s, then back to Norfolk in late Feb.

Fun times. I made Corporal and was an MAA / Shore Patrol, so I knew where to go on Liberty.

Still haven't heard the story about why it grounded...but do note, the pilot would have been a Canal pilot. No ship can transit that canal, not even a small sailboat, without paying the graft...ur I mean, "hiring" the canal pilots.

So if I had to guess? A mechanical failure or loss or power or something...ain't that hard NOT to run into a bank, and if somebody was bent on doing this on purpose, scuttling the thing would be far more effective/damaging.

Strong winds and loss of visual due to a sandstorm is what I read. Once you are in there, you are kind of screwed. With all those containers on top acting as a sail has to be pretty hard to control.

I must have just missed you in Mombasa. LPH-11 New Orleans was there in 1980. It was a cool place (at least back then) A day safari thru Tsavo Park was awesome.

I suppose anything is possible but, with all the middle east drama we've seen over the past few years, I'm thinking that Canal Pilot and his history needs to be investigated.    Not saying it wasn't wind and a lack of visibility but, I think a background investigation is worth doing to ensure that Canal Pilot wasn't associated with any groups wanting to affect certain economies.  I would find it hard to believe that those pilots don't check current and forecasted weather conditions.

We had LPH2 Iwo Jima with us for the first part of that trip. I actually crossed the Atlantic aboard it and our Squadron cross-decked over to the LHA in Portsmouth after the fjords-ex. The Iwo got the OV-10 Broncos craned back aboard for their return to Norfolk while we kept going with Harriers instead.

Mombasa was a real eye-opener, I bought some nicely carved animals and traded all sorts of Tshirts and whatnot in the open air market. Portable game electronics were especially lucrative, even though they were cheap rudimentary versions typical of that era.

So.... How many times has the Suez Canal been closed to shipping.  I did several searches and only found one article which was a history of the canal itself.  It that article is the following:

The canal was closed to navigation twice in the contemporary period. The first closure was brief, coming after the tripartite British-French-Israeli invasion of Egypt in 1956, an invasion primarily motivated by the nationalization of the waterway. The canal was reopened in 1957. The second closure occurred after the June 1967 War with Israel and lasted until 1975, when Egypt and Israel signed the second disengagement accord.
After July 1952 Revolution, president Gamal Abd El Naser publicized the canal in announcement in (26 July, 1956) making the management of the canal a 100% Egyptian, which enraged the major countries leading to the Triad assault on Egypt in (29 October, 1956) which caused to the closing of the canal and it was reopened in (march 1957).

So..... can anyone tell me or show me a link to a history of the canal regarding it being "blocked" by an accident such as a ship be run aground.  That would go a long way to dismissing the notion that it was planned.

I've owned and put a lot of miles on three different 2nd gen Cummins Diesels.   They are pull'n son of a guns.   Having said that, I now pull my trailers with an 2018 Ram with a Cummins 6.7L in it and being honest,  it pulls like crazy.  I absolutely love it.

But, I'm just happy we aren't going to have another toilet paper shortage.   I hate going to Wally World.

the LHA Tarawa ship class was built when aluminum wiring which was all the rage vs copper when they were built. the main buss bars were also aluminum.  after lots of failures huge ship alts $$$$ where done to replace all with copper. also a lot of problems with LP air systems same for some LPH and LPDs. just very poor designs and layouts. for the LHAs the railing along the flight deck walkway were a lot of plastic, didn't work well.
I was on all those ships doing INSURV Inspections, and new environmental equipment installation inspections and training.

I sailed thru the Suez aboard USS George Washington CVN-73 heading back to Norfolk in '94 from its maiden med cruise, which got cut short when she was diverted to the persian gulf by clinton and where I COD'd on. Was suppose to get on at an Italy port of call, but last minute we were diverted to the gulf. was onboard for 4.5 weeks.
