It didn't take long to realize there was something not quite right about Joey.

A first for me.

Took Joey for his second constitutional of the morning.

After leaving what a paleontologist may think is elephant spoor in millenia to come we approached the creek footbridge.

He stopped dead.
Bowed his back.
Didn't make a noise. He's a quiet dog anyway so that's not unusual for him.

And slowly backed up 4 steps.

And?

Holy Moley.

I know it's a product of what he eats but this dog could strip rust off a beached oil tanker.  Cheesy

A couple times in my life I've been visiting someone and their dog farts, and it clears the room like some kind of chemical warfare experiment.    2funny
Usually SBDs too (silent but deadly), so there's no warning.

Maybe there's some minty dog food.

I had guessed 3 years old. took him to the vet a couple of months ago for a check up and her best guess was 18 / 24 months.

He had a few chewing furniture moments causing me to use by school bus driver voice in the house. He understood pretty quickly.

Yesterday I saw him grow up.

He looks pretty long and lean for a lab. But then...........

We were at a regular walking spot where I can let him roam on a 30 foot leash and do some Come here training.

There's a row of leylandii along one edge of the grassy area. With a house fence behind them.

He went on alert. He's done this before but it was different.

He suddenly became very blocky in stature.

His droopy ears lifted to the horizontal making his head look squarer. He took a wide stance across the shoulders and hips making his body lower and all in all he looked like one of the many internet photos of black labs. Much stockier than normal.

I thought there was a cat or other animal hiding in the undergrowth but then realized on the other side of the trees there was a man mowing grass using an electric mower.

He runs like a race horse and has long legs.

He's also been told to keep off the furniture.

Which he does.

Until yesterday when he looked me straight in the eyes and slowly backed up onto an ottoman.

A dog who sees and alerts on suspicious things before you do is a good buddy to have.

Just having a pal is nice too.    cooldude

If you have room, go to a Good Will/Salvation Army/Thrift Shop and get him his own piece of furniture to lay on. He'll learn the difference between yours and his.

Oh he has his. He just gets moments and does what he thinks should do. 99% of the time it makes me laugh.

Anyone got an idea as to what triggers the licking when he scratches his left front leg?

It's the only time this physical behavior happens when he scratches.

Not really.  Our dog Zoe likes to lick her paws.  She does it more often when she comes in from a walk when the ground/grass is wet.

We thought it might be an allergic reaction but tired some Benadryl and it did not change her habits.

We she was a puppy, one of the things that attracted me to her was that when I first picked her up she licked my hands.  I thought it was a sign of affection but, it may have just been her "thing".

An update on Joey.

About 6 months ago he had a lump removed from the back of his neck.

Vet did a crap job at closing the wound and that's all I've got to say about that.

Had to take him for surgery again yesterday. Different vet. The lump grew back  Angry

Due to previous scar tissue and wanting to make sure all the margins were excised here's the result.

He was a bit out of sorts yesterday but today he's back on full tail flying and wagging.

He's also having to wear the cone of annoyance for 2 weeks until the staples are out.

He tolerated that very well last time.

2funny  "cone of annoyance".  I'm sure Joey will deal with it better than any of us could.

Cool pic.

Those grey whiskers remind me of looking in the mirror.
