New lady. New bike. New address. And now....... Just recently a black dog used to visit my house every couple of weeks on no fixed schedule. He was very friendly from the first time and was more than happy to come inside, eat a couple of hot dogs, drink some water and crash on a rug for 20 or so minutes. The first time he had no I.D. On his collar. The second time he had a phone tag which I called to be told he lived locally and was just out roaming around and he would find his way home. I sent my lady Sandra some photos and she told me the dogs name should be Joey and I should take him to Maggie Valley, NC where she lived and where I was spending quite some time. She was saying it light heartedly. I told her that I couldn't because if it was my dog that disappeared I would be devastated if it just disappeared without trace. He kept coming round. No surprise if I was feeding, watering him and allowing him to have a short snooze. Eventually he had a Bandit name tag on. Sandra was still convinced his name should be Joey. The last time he showed up was my moving day to Maggie Valley. The temptation was strong to put him in the drivers cab of the rental truck and whisk him away. He's a very friendly dog and made sure that that the guys helping me move gave him a good head scratch or chest rub . My dog, Bear, took his last trip to the vet about 8 years ago and I had been using every dog I met as a surrogate. While living in Clayton I had got to know Jack the donkey who lived nearby and Rosie the dog who lived down the road. Moving to Maggie would take me away from my 2 furry friends. Still looking at the Rabun County FB page I saw someone had a dog they needed to pass on to a new owner. IT'S BANDIT/JOEY!!! I contacted the owner and showed him photos of the dog hanging out at my house. He was pleased that I knew the dog and yes, he could be mine. Joey had just recently been neutered and had his rabies shot. Sandra and I drove to Clayton to meet the owner who turned out to be the son of one of the bus drivers I had worked with for 3 years. It's a small world. Joey seemed pleased to see me and away we went in the Jeep with Joey safely ensconced in the rear cargo area. Today he's at a vet Sandra has used in the past getting a bath and a check over to make sure he's 100% or as near as could be expected. He's about 3 and I think predominantly lab with some pointer thrown in. Strong and right now not very leash disciplined and tries to drag me down the street. We've already made some progress there. The previous owner had got him from the result of a couples divorce. He in turn realized he had too much going on his life to include Joey. Our gain. Sandra told me Joey was definitely my dog and then spent the first night making a big fuss of him. Here's Joey. About 75 pounds of brains and fun.

"Joey let's me touch his food bowl while he's eating. Very good natured." we got Sasha when she was 3mo old. she will let me touch her bowl now, but not at 1st. she was a real handful for the first 2-1/2 to 3yrs, now she's mellow and a very friendly dog.

story behind the pic. I was sitting in my chair petting our cat, Sasha came into the room and was jealous. as soon as the cat jumped down she jumped up! she hasn't been a lap dog for a long time. lol

Awesome glad it worked out, I would have had a hard time also leaving him. But you did the right thing and it worked out, like it was meant to be. After 2 years of our Barkley being gone we look all the time and see him in so many other fur balls. Was thinking of another one but the time and effort and restrictions are more than we want to take on right now. But we miss him very much.

Here is another dog story: Last summer we had a video go viral; it has 1.8 million views on Facebook, almost all within the first 14 days. I posted it on a local NBC affiliates Facebook page that features Minnesota photos and short videos. The Local TV affiliate ran it as an end piece on the news shortly after I posted it, and then . . . Boom! (I believe other NBC affiliates picked it up and ran it as well.) I first started seeing comments from the US, then Canada, then Western Europe, then Eastern Europe, then South America, and finally New Zeland and Australia. I could see the spread on social media in real time over a few days as it lept continents. https://www.facebook.com/100002129920637/posts/3049316331816001/And no . . . I made zero dollars on it. And that is ok, putting the dog to work to make money just doesn’t sound like any fun to me. Plus, I’m afraid the dog would let it go to her head.

Good boy, Joey! Good boy. Paul! My wife doesn't really like animals in the house (I have to sleep outside), so I don't have a dog. Also she would not care for it while I'm on the road carousing with my VRCC friends. I do have 2 "granddogs" that are very special to me, Fritz and Betsy.

I’ve had dogs all my life. Many types. They’ve all been good dogs. I once had a dog that looked just like Bandit/Joey. I was living by myself in a cabin my senior year of high school. I got her from the pound. She was named Jaws. I was watching over a friends property while he was building a new house about 20 miles out of town. The cabin was just slapped together with scraps, but it had water and electric. I came home from school one day and she was near death lying next to the power cord for the hot water heater. I carried her a quarter mile thru the woods to a friends place. After a few hours it looked like she was going to live, but she couldn’t walk or get up. It was a week before she was halfway back to normal, and she lived at least 4 more years before I gave her away when I went in the Navy. Jaws was probably about 6 months old when this happened. She never grew another inch or pound. I could tell dog stories all day.

Grrreat story Britman! Layla is her name. This is the 5th dog the wife and I've had over the 35yrs we've been together. We found her in southern Ohio at a place called Dumped Dogs.com. An Amish guy dropped off a pregnant Chocolate Lab and told the owner of DD's he didn't want her. Mom was in bad shape but was able to birth the pups(5) and nurse them for 4 weeks before she died. (Mom's are special, aren't they) 2 Of the pups died shortly after Mom. We brought Layla home at 6wks and she wasn't very healthy but we got her back on her feet. She is thee most lovable dog we've ever had and by far the most spoiled. Wife and I will always have dogs. We love them!

I love dogs, one of Gods greatest gifts to man.
I whole heartedly agree. When I look at my buddy Bowser, I know he's always glad to see me. Even after I've scolded him for some previous mischief. When the world turns it's back on you, a dog will always be your friend. Some dogs are mistreated, become scared of humans and react accordingly. Have seen it before. This is a great story and want to thank Paul for posting it. Shows he has a good heart.Unfortunately, I'm not able to post a pic of my buddy Bowser but anyone that ever met him has a memory of a very large animal that loves attention and of course dinner. He's about 165 lbs of lap puppy. No, we don't let him do that but, he'd love to get right on up on your lap if we'd let him. The lady I got him from paid $1,800 for him as an 11 week old puppy. I guess she didn't think he'd ever grow. As a yearling, she decided that she was tired of one or two of her kids coming in crying saying that Bowser had knocked them down. They actually taught him to jump up and put his paws over their shoulders and then complained when he played rougher than they liked. Regardless, she put an advertisement on Craigslist trying to get all of her money back. Very few folks want a dog as large as Bowser. She got no takers. After watching her ad for about a month, I sent her a message offering her a smaller amount of money but assuring her that I had all the things a dog of this size needed. Didn't hear back from her for about three months and then one day I got an email stating that she would accept my offer but, I had to come get him by Friday (which meant I had three days to get there). Saturday, they were taking him to the pound (which was a kill shelter after 10 days). I didn't hesitate, I immediately responded and went to get him the next day. Drove about a hundred miles and got him. Bowser wasn't used to getting in or riding in a vehicle, much less an open top Jeep. On the way home, a semi passed us on a down hill slope and his Jake brake kicked in. It scared Bowser so badly, he jumped into my lap. Now, just imagine driving a Jeep (not all that big of a vehicle) and have a 165 lb dog jumped between you and the steering wheel. He's since got used to riding in vehicles and in fact gets excited when ever he hears my Cummins start up but, refuses to learn to drive. Would like to have him ride the Valkyrie with me but, he apparently doesn't understand leaning into the curves. May try again with him on the Trike. Rams

What happened to her? Had she chewed the cord and gotten Shocked? Or was it something else?

Great story. We love animals in this house. Our dog Belle is a pit/lab mix that is absolutely fantastic. We have 2 horses, 3 mini donkeys, a barn cat and Belle. Belle even goes horse back riding with us. She is an awesome trail dog....we did 14 miles the other day.

I have a harness on the possible list. Since we got a much shorter leash than the one given to us by the previous owner it's made a world of difference. Much less pulling as he can feel the handler is more in control.

A first for me.
Took Joey for his second constitutional of the morning.
After leaving what a paleontologist may think is elephant spoor in millenia to come we approached the creek footbridge.
He stopped dead. Bowed his back. Didn't make a noise. He's a quiet dog anyway so that's not unusual for him.
And slowly backed up 4 steps.
