Hey all,

I ended up bringing my IS home from Tennessee, as my wife was never totally comfortable riding it in the mountains. Decided I’m gonna make her a bagger and pull the trunk off all together, and make it a single seater.

I know that I will need to get rails from a standard or Tourer, and that I need to get a brake light and wiring to make it all plug and play.

What I don’t know is what to do with the radio antenna?  Anything else I am forgetting?

What do these trunks bring these days? Seem to recall years ago they brought a pretty penny, but now I don’t know for certain.

Slight side topic, but I do have the ultimate seats on this one, and would be selling the passenger back rest and passenger seat. If someone was interested in it, I would also be tempted to sell the lowboy front, as it matches those seats, and pick up a new seat for a single person.

Thanks for any help!

Some guys keep the Interstate fender struts (rails) and notch them so the trunk can go on and off.  Otherwise, I'd get non-interstate fender struts.

The taillight for the rear fender knockout is still available new.  The lens is the same for a couple other Hondas, but the mount part is not exactly the same and takes fiddling to make work (I just bought new parts).  You need two short tail light wiring harness pieces.  The whole thing is not that expensive new.

If you have bag rails, the big whip antenna can be rigged to a clamp on one side rail or the other.  Otherwise, you don't really need the big whip and a shorter stubby antenna will work (which can be mounted somewhere pretty easy).

Trunks used to go for $1000-800, but I think less now that demand is diminished.  See what Pinwall Cycle or Ebay is selling them for.  If you have a rarer two tone trunk, that might be worth a bit more than black (most common, by far).

If you sell the trunk and don't want it anymore, I'd sell the trunk passenger backrest with it.  You might keep the passenger seat against the possibility that you might want to take a passenger sometime.  (I don't and got rid of the passenger pegs too).

I'd keep the Lowboy if you like it.  I like the Bigboy better (at 5'9").

I assume you don't have the CB (mounted under the truck), or you'd have another antenna.

Jess...TRUNK!  Wink

Typing was the only class I ever flunked out of John.

I have a rare form of typing dyslexia; there's a decent number of words I know how to spell, but when I tell my fingers to type them, they comes out wrong, exactly the same way wrong every time.  When the wrong word is not misspelled (and underlined by spellchecker) it stays wrong.  It can't be cured.  And I don't much give a sh!t.  Grin

I simply made a  bracket of aluminum angle from Ace hardware and mounted the antenna. Because I added a luggage rack, I mounted to the side of the rack using the backrest mounting holes.

Look up super valk.

Here is one thread I have saved, I had at least 2 more about the tail light. It's old, so some pictures are missing.

I think search would be best. As mentioned, there is one where the trunk is changed to a quick remove.

The trunk will be sold, and seems the black born part beauties win out again for a good price.  I have heard of folks putting the antenna in the fairing...provided it doesn’t play bad with the Rosta, we should be good to go.

I did this with my Supervalked '01 I/S. Used an amplified Dakota Digital unit - AM-FM reception only.

At present there's a set of modified I/S rails on the bike. The studs were cut off and ground flush then drilled and tapped. M8 flange nuts were welded to the inside of the two rear mount tabs prior to tapping those holes, and after smoothing things down the rails were powdercoated gloss black. I also converted another set of the I/S rails and had them re-chromed. Should I want to run a trunk with one or both antennas (the other being for the CB and a ham radio transceiver) it's a simple matter of four bolts and some wire connections. Would probably take me less time to install the trunk than it did to type this paragraph.

Another rail option: Get a set of Std/Tourer rails with the sissybar side plates and sissybar. Scrounge around for a Hondaline CB antenna mount plate that fits the sissybar setup, and install the mount along with the antenna. If you have a CB, put it in the battery box behind the battery. You'll have to trim part of the box to allow it to fit; when I did installations of this sort I placed two wedges made from closed-cell foam in the cutout area with the transceiver body. The wedges act as packing/cushioning. Last thing you'll need is the AM-FM/CB "splitter" from a GL1100A; eBay usually has several listed and Sierra Electronics carries them new. This allows you to use the CB antenna as the AM-FM reception antenna.

Thanks! Forgot to mention that I do not have a CB any longer...sold that a few years back.

I have to admit that I am not using my cell phone for much of its capabilities, but more and more I listen to iHeartRadio, and should probably incorporate that somehow.  Just some rambling thoughts... Grin
