........... that’s about 256,000 glasses of water…or about 450 toilet flushes each day (which you’d probably need to help you get rid of the 256,000 glasses of water).   Smiley   cooldude

Several years ago, our neighbor's water bill suddenly increased significantly.  She called a plumber and had him check out the pipes.  He did, and told her there was nothing wrong with her side, it must be the meter.  She called the water company and told them the story and they said they'd send someone over to check it out.  A couple of months went by and they never showed so she called them again and repeated the story.  A couple of more months go by and still they never showed, so she smashed the meter with a brick, then called them and said there's something wrong with the meter -that it quit working and is spraying water everywhere.  They showed up within the hour.

Damn! That's a lot of water.  Shocked
That's more than enough to completely refill my pool. I sure am glad we don't have any metered water at my house. I dearly love my well!

It's a double edge sword however, when the well or septic tank has to be fixed or replaced it's ALL on my nickel!  :'(

I think we are fairly water-light, but how do I know? Since we're pulling from an unmetered well I have never been able to check exactly how much water we use a month/year. I've always been curious.  Never ran the well dry so I must not be using to much.

Soon after my brother moved into his house, every now and then, he would get an extra-high water bill.  He couldn't figure out why, but he knew he didn't have any leaks since it was irregular and, similar to you, he didn't have any water in his house or yard.  Eventually, he noticed that his hose that he had coiled up (before going away for a weekend) near his outside faucet had been disturbed.  He finally figured out that his neighbor had been stealing his water to top off his swimming pool when he wasn't home.  Apparently this had been going on for years when my elderly grandmother lived there.  Can you believe that?  So he went and installed a shut-off valve inside of his garage for that faucet and keeps it turned off unless he is using it.  All of a sudden, his neighbor started giving him an attitude...but of course wouldn't say why he was so pissed.  That pretty much capped it...my brother thinks its funny now that his neighbor is so pissed every time spring rolls around and he has to fill up the pool.

UPDATE:

Called the city this morning.

The service guy said, "I'll check it out."
The billing lady said, "We can see the usage over the last three months spiked. We'll adjust the bill."

Got home from work and it's fixed.

Gotta love it when it works like it should. Kudos to the city guys/gals!

I'm on the Board of Works and we rule on unusually high water/ sewer bills.  Our utilities department is on the lookout for unusual bills. Almost all of the time we rule in favor of the owner. We also are prompt in any problems called in.  However, that doesn't mean that we are oblivious to what's going on.

One property owner ,a real  SOB,  was building a new business, restaurant and truck stop.  Our engineer caught him deviating somewhat from the approved plans. This jerk was running a 2 inch water line direct from a tap on our water main, bypassing the meter. He was intending on having "free" water for an RV filling station.  We cut his illegal line and buried it under a foot of concrete.

The city was thinking about suing him but we let him off after his dumbass son, while playing with a bulldozer on the site,  proceeded to flatten his Dad's new pickup truck. cooldude
