Valkyrie 1800C's are WAY too torquey for mudding. "Taking inappropriate equipment to out of the way places for over 50 years."

When I pull either one of my bikes (especially the 1800) out of the shed, I duckwalk it back and forth until it is pointed directly straight up to the driveway, especially if it is wet out. Stanley Steamer brought his bike down past the driveway to access the compressor once, and fishtailed all the way out ... -Mike

I trailed my first bike (650 BSA Lightning).
Not successfully (at all), so I quit that foolishness.
But learning the most gentle throttle roll comes in handy no matter where you ride.

Jess, I had 2 Lightnings, a '66 & a '67. They did some off the beaten path excursions too. Vibrating monsters they were.

Heh...yeah, upshifting a gear or two higher than normal for that speed would have been helpful. Moderates the "YeeeHAAAAW!" at the back wheel.

Had my old CB 500/4 off road couple times. At my age I care to NOT off road with Phatt Ghurl. And I have motocrossed in Japan. A lot of those old skills still apply today! RIDE SAFE.

That's about a 15 degree side-slope, with a white-rock mud wash over hard-packed gravel...slicker than snot...but I still doubt I'd have had the issue in this spot today, if I'd had been on a 1st gen valk...though to be clear I've stuffed the 1st gen valk in WAY more inappropriate places...
In this case though it's the difference in throttles...
...carbs and EFI...when ya twist the wick on the 1st gen valks you are adding power...when you twist the wick on this thing you are choosing an RPM and it will add whatever power to get that...you can be WAY more subtle with the 1st gen Valk...
It'll be something I get used to...bump it up a gear and judicious clutch and it'll be fine.
Gonna be careful with it 1st time I get it out in the rain though for sure!

Most of the time 2nd gear takes the place of 1st with the 1800.

you can be WAY more subtle with the 1st gen Valk...When my 1800 was still pretty new I headed off to Wimp's house in Tn... it was chilly and rainy, and in a place near knoxville called "alcoa" I pull off to get some coffee... when I accelerated out of McDonalds onto the main road I got so sideways I bonked my knee on the handlebars... but the bike still straightened up ... -Mike

BTW: That's about a 15 degree upslope, and 15 degree side-slope...and she's nose down in an actual ditch...so for those asking how I got her out: 1) Step back, take picture. It is the modern way. 2) Grab front wheel and drag it out of the ditch. She's only about a 700lb bike. 3) Using proper technique, stand 'er up! Both the gen1 and gen2 Valks are pretty easy despite their size just due to the low CG. This is made only slightly more difficult by the slick conditions. I'll be happy to demo picking up a Valk at Inzane if somebody else isn't doing it already and folks want to see. 4) Since I'm now facing the wrong way on the road, ride till I find a good place to turn around and try again (in 2nd gear) And...yah...I may actually have to wash her. That's the worst part of the entire ordeal

Darkside helps some in the slop... I have to deal with this if I return from a road trip and it's been raining by the casa. Crabapple Rd is clay/dirt, like soap when wet enough. Even so, extreme care is needed to keep the rubber down - and that's with Gen 1 Valks. Fortunately it's only about 0.2mi from pavement to drive.

Yeah, I'm darkside on gen1...except when I get free Avons LOL! I've not even looked into DS options for the 1800. I assume there are some. The OEM tires suck as bad as the OEM's on the gen1 valks did...

The OEM tires suck as bad as the OEM's on the gen1 valks did... Quite a few owners put on a Goldwing 1800 rim to get more tire choices. The car tire on mine is too square. I don't know the brand. Need to make a note of it.
