I did a little looking on the DOD Presidio school housing situation.
San Francisco is not especially cheap to live in.
It says new recruits must live in barracks for the first 4 weeks.
Then there are a bunch of housing locations offered all over the place, for various ranks.
I hope they provide her with affordable, tollerable (and safe) housing.
When I was stationed in SoCA (March AFB), I had to get on a list for base housing (long waits), and even with a bit of a bump in housing allowance for the location, my (modest) rental house for a year cost me hundreds more each month than my housing allowance.
Then, when they showed me my company grade officer's housing (off base), it was all infested with mice (and no extra charge). It's not just a job its a freeking adventure.
And to show just how bad it was, my wife the 3d world Turkish girl, cried when she saw the house.
Good fortune let me get one of the only 5 (token) company grade houses on base, which was very nice.

Different Presidio. (Although Monterey is probably just as expensive to live)

Well crap I didn't know.
Although my research on housing was on the language school website.
And yea, Monterey might be a buck cheaper.

Monterrey - where the Naval Post Graduate School is located - very expensive.... Anywhere offbase in CA is going to be very expensive - high VHA rates.
Kali might find it cheaper to stay in the barracks, although they may not be very private.

There are (or were) bases in California in some cheap, rundown areas. You could get an apartment in Vallejo for next to nothing. It’s not where I would recommend though. 4 of us rented a duplex with a garage in Napa for $800. (This was centuries ago though) I imagine Kali will figure it out just fine. I’m very excited for her. A whole new world is about to open up for her.

Well I know when my adopted Granddaughter Lt. at the time-was stationed in Ft Hood Texas her housing allowance covered her off base housing expenses pretty well and she was single at the time. And seems as if she was 15 20 minutes from the base if the thinkin muscle sorta still operatin. RIDE SAFE.

A young friend of mine did the same thing a few years ago. Joined right out of high school. He studied chinese and was quite adapt at it. Finished his bachlors degree while in the service. After the service he taught english in China for a couple of years and now is finishing his PhD down the road at Stanford.
The opportunities are outstanding.

Took her and her sister to her favorite gastronomic experience on Earth, Texas de Brazil (That I haven't been to in the 8 years since my gastric bypass surgery) tonight.... They asked if we were celebrating anything special, told them Kali's enlistment in the U.S. Army... Without bidding, they gave us a 20% "Hero's Discount".... Her first military discount! She LOVES getting dressed to the nines, and wears 4" heels, that she does NOT need.... (She's ALMOST eye to eye with me when she does. Got a LOT of looks in the restaurant!)
