Kali's been working on a little project now, it would have been done a month or two ago but government bureaucracy slowed things down (Imagine that) but it was finally brought across the finish line today...

She's done a LOT of things I'm very proud of, but I think this one, so far at least, takes the cake as far as proud daddy goes.

In her words what happened today:

"So. Some of you know, some of you don't. My family and I have been trying to keep this under wraps, but now that everything's signed, sealed, and official. I am proud to announce my plans to join the United States Army. I am signed to join the MOS (Military Occupational Service) of 35P, or cryptological linguist. This has been a long time coming and thank all of my friends and family who supported me and my decision. I ship out July 19, and am super excited."

(And yes, she intentionally negotiated her ship out date for AFTER Inzane... Smiley )

If all goes to plan (Hah) after basic she'll be sent to the Defense Language Institute at The Presidio in Monterey California for a year of intensive language training. (Don't know the language yet).

She's such an amazing human being!!  smitten
Whatever she wants to do for the rest of her life, tell her to get the training/education while in the military! (Wish I would have done that.)

Hopefully, she can get leave every year for InZane.  If not, you're going have to start getting spawn #2 some serious saddle time to build up his endurance. crazy2

Odds are against her being able to get away for it, but she'll try....

And yeah, the spousal unit and myself have already begun the down selection process as to which of my 3 possibilities Co-Rider Spawn #2 will be....

Congrats to Kali on her choosing to serve and learn but was the Marine Corps not accepting recruits?   Huh?

Last I knew, but I've been away for over forty years, the armed services gives thirty days per year to each member for leave.  If one can't work in InZane with that kind of vacation time that's a real problem.   Smiley

That's still true - however, depending on where she is in her training, she may or may not be able to take leave next summer for Inzane.

Congrats to Serk and especially Kali - hard field to get into, and one that opens up lots of possibilities when you decide to leave the service.

I kinda' figured Brian would be the most gung-ho.

It had been him, but Kaelynn's been showing him up on requests for rides lately as well as for length of ride she's comfortable with.... And Blake is creeping up on both of 'em...

All 3 of 'em are good with 150 mile round trip rides already, so who knows...

Congrats to Kali on her choosing to serve and learn but was the Marine Corps not accepting recruits?   Huh?

We'll see on the leave, especially with her AIT being an intensive year plus experience...

As far as the Marines, she did consider it, however the Army has the Golden Knights exhibition parachuting team, which is her REAL goal in all of this...

Congratulations for Kali, and for her proud parents.   cooldude

The Defense Language Institute at The Presidio in Monterey is commonly viewed as the finest language school in the world.  I hope she can take something useful to her career.  (In or out of military service)

But holy crap would I dread Chinese or Japanese.

Go Army, beat Navy.

Crypto will require quite the security background investigation, her and her family.

Obviously, she had very high scores to get DLI, congratulations to one fine young lady.   Her world will really open up to her now.   While I truthfully have no idea what language she'll be learning, one can somewhat look at the world's crisis areas and suggest a few different options.   Several different middle eastern options are there, Chinese and Russian also.   You can bet it won't be French, Spanish or German.

Bryan, you and the Mrs did a fine job of rearing a wonderful young'n.   Keep it up.   You have much to be proud of and still have three challenges ahead of you.  Wink

I would strongly urge her to get into as good of physical shape as possible prior to leaving for basic training.   It doesn't matter how smart you are in basic, everyone has to meet the physical goals and being in shape helps one handle the mental stress they are gonna put on her.   Not that she isn't already in shape but build up her wind and ability to run (while thinking).   She'll be glad she did.

WOW !  Amazing young lady for sure !  Congratulations to Kali and her VERY proud parents.

As stated earlier, it could be very beneficial to prepare for basic training starting now.

https://usarmybasic.com/army-physical-fitness/get-shape-army-basic-training

While in basic she will be go through an extensive background investigation by the FBI to obtain the required Top Secret security clearance.....probably a polygraph or two also.  Family, friends, neighbors etc. may be contacted in the process.

With that type of background and a good language choice, the world will be at her feet whenever she decides to leave the service and return to civilian life..... be it 3 - 20 years later.

Wishing her the VERY best and include me in the "very proud of her" category !!    cooldude cooldude

And on the fitness, yeah, been reminding her of that, but she's starting from a good position, being on at least one competitive swim team for the last 8 years and is swimming (Which includes weight lifting and other physical conditioning) 1-2 hours a day...

Could always do more, but she's coming from a good starting position at least...

Yes - you probably ought to warn relatives, friends, etc. they might be getting a call / visit from a federal LEO asking questions about her - I wouldn't expect anything that should be too much problems. She might want to put together a list with contact information before she heads out to basic training - will be much more relaxed for her to get this together BEFORE she goes, and maybe give her parents a copy of it in case she isn't able to keep it with her so you can mail it to her. One can never be too prepared for this type of investigation. (Having gone through some of these myself - and I'm sure Carolina can vouch for that as well). She also needs to keep an ongoing list of these contacts and living locations / duty stations for her entire government career.

Awesome!  Congrats to Kali. I met her briefly in Taos.  Very impressive.

Prayers for a safe and fulfilling career.

Awesome, she is in for an adventure.

I joined the Army out of high school too (1980-83); it was the right thing to do for me, much to my friends confusion.  It is a difficult thing for a young person to do, to take such a leap.  The linguist school requires the highest ASVAB scores along with air traffic controller; smart kid, no doubt about it.

It will be a time for her to see the world.  I think all young people should have an adventure and travel the world before they settle down.  She will probably be speaking Farsi in short time, but German or French would be good too.  Maybe a western Europe posting for a few years?? The Army time in Europe is not the Army she will experience in the States; it is much more relaxed overseas.

And then when her commitment is up (4 years??), she can come back home and join a Guard/Reserve unit if she still likes it.  It is easy to transfer to another branch for a different MOS as well.  Any helicopter units nearby?  Maybe apply for a warrant officer pilot slot??

I was recruited under the marketing tag of "Be All You Can Be", it worked for me in many ways; it is what you make of it.

Best of luck.

this is awesome being accepted into a specialty field like that and if she enjoys learning new languages can only help ease the pain of the rest of the stuff she will have to go thru.   I hope she enjoys running since am sure basic training, etc. they run miles and miles per day, if required.

Best of luck to her, tell her to hang in there when the going gets tough,  and sounds like a good thing to get into especially in today's society where English might be a 2nd language here in the United States in years to come?

A few kids from our small school systems always goes into the military and helping pay for future college expenses alone is a good deal for most families.  My brother's kid has been in the military now as a trained medic the past 8 years or so and said is a pretty good deal to go into if can get thru all that basic training/running stint.
