Good morning Dan,
I had thyroid cancer twice and they removed 1/2 of the gland each time. I'll pray for your Mom's quick recovery. They stitched my wound the first time but glued it for the second. It heals quickly and there wasn't much pain either time.
Swallowing feels weird and they discouraged using straws. Encourage her to stay hydrated! If she heals quickly, she should be relatively normal within a week.
God bless her and give her my best wishes and encouragement.

Dan, WOW! I just met her the other day and she seemed fine! Ya just never know, I guess. Anyway, I found her to be an interesting, delightful, caring, really nice person, so you betcha I'll be pulling for her! The world could sure use some more from that mold...
