I am looking at maybe buying a project bike, and if so will be needing the services of a painter.  In my area we don't have access to motorcycle painters, just auto body shops.  I don't have anything against body shops except you are at the mercy of their priorities.  They are pressured by customers needing their daily vehicles as opposed to me by my motorcycle.  I am considering buying an Interstate that will need repainting and wonder if anyone here does that or can recommend someone that does good work.  I am in southern IN and will remove parts from bike and deliver to reasonable distance. Thanks

I could get it painted here ( Knoxville ,TN ) for around $1,000.00 for a Interstate ( $850.00 Tourer ). But just like all painter I've ever had dealings with he never does what he claim's so if he said 2 weeks you can expect 5 weeks.I've had several motorcycles a couple pick-ups and three cars painted all with different painters over the years and each and every one of them will tell you anything to get your business but never do they do what the original deal was  Undecided  I got this one painted for around $1,150 total and that was getting Corbin Bettlebags painted first and then the stock bags several weeks later when it became obvious to me  that I did'nt like the way the Corbins looked on a Valkyrie

Try the HD dealers. There should be rack with magazines and you can usually find some bussiness cards for painters. I think theres a HD dealer in Edinburg. I'm sure there is alot of bike painters in Indy. Depends what you want to do as a design. I spent $2500 on my paint. Alot of hand preping. In a couple years I plan on taking it to a auto body shop and have them paint it. I'm sure I can get it done for a few hundred $$. Its only paint and mine has alot of tattoos and scars form my travels. Where ever you go I'd go before the snow lets up. As spring rolls in, cars will want to be painted from winter damage and bikes will want to be painted for the spring thaw.

I can recommend someone in Mid-Michigan, it'd be a ways for you though. He did my Valk tank, '67 SuperHawk and my '65 Dream. Email me if you want the info.

I just looked at your web site (Lancaster, right?)

I really was happy to find this Hoppe fairing...

I'd like to get a good paint job on it...

I live over near Clemson...

Dave,
I would find a good automotive paint supplier in your area, or a larger city near you, and ask them who they would recommend. The larger body shops have their own paint reps AND SUPPLIERS, the small guys (THE ARTISTS LIKE BD'S CYCLES ABOVE) rely on the local paint suppliers for their paint.

yup, that's me.  The pushing on the paint you're seeing sometimes happens when bolts are tightened down before paint cures enough, or if there's no washer under them and between the bolt/fairing, although there can be other reasons as well....

I checked out your site.  Nice work.  Ive got a Valk standard Im interested in having repainted.  No bags or fairing.  Saw a House of Kolors paint color I like.  Can you give me an idea of cost.  Unfortunately I dont live in SC so I would have to factor in shipping costs. Do you own a Valkyrie also?

Double checking with others who have Hoppe Fairings, I found that I tightened the bolts pretty much
"the right amount", used a washer and a rubber washer, and waited almost three weeks after the
fairing was done so it would be cured.... the painter has done awesome work, similar to what is on your
web page, he used paint from a local paint store... I wonder if he'd used ColorRite or something it would
have been better? Maybe the paint was too thick at that crucial spot? Should some kind of catalyst or
hardener been used? I bet if I had waited a couple of months it would have finally cured enough, but heck...

Maybe I should just take it back to Daniel, but I want to avoid whatever caused the problem last time...

Hey Steelers, I sent you a PM  cooldude

Hubcapsc, sounds like you did the right thing.  It could have been a number of other factors that caused what you're seeing, anything from improper mix ratios, too many coats of a product, products applied too heavy, who knows....  It's unlikely that it was used because the paint was "X" brand, they all generally work about the same.
