When it rains a lot like it has been here in Tomball Tx the last couple days, and you have a lot of water in the ditches and a lot of standing water in the yd, the 1”-2” long crawfish come out to play.   2 nights ago in an hour or so I caught 285 crawfish.   They were just everywhere.   Tonight about 9:00 pm I went out and picked up another 63 crawfish in about 15 minutes.  Thats  348 crawfish in the last couple nights.
I dump them in a storm drain downvthe road that has fast flowing current that will take them about half a mile down the road to a highway ditch.   Its just amazing.

Google tells me there are ....  34 native species of crayfish in Virginia, as well as several non-native species.

I've never seen one.

But holy crap do I have a lot of cicadas.  But only a maniac or starving man could eat them.  You would think the birds would eat them, but I have not seen that happen.

They are just starting to make noise in the trees.

At least crayfish are quiet.

I feel the same way about crawfish, but to each their own...

And, evidently eating cicadas is the current in trend, but don't have any if you have shellfish allergies, evidently they're closely enough related it can cause issues.

Here's a recipe if you're interested:

When I was a kid growing up in South Chicago there were two sets of train tracks nearby, in the ditches along side of the tracks water would sit and I would go there to hunt crayfish. I got to the point where I could shove my hand into the hole far enough for the crayfish to latch onto my finger with its claw and I could pull it out of there, it hurt but I caught a little buggers. Those things were 3-5 inches long, I would catch females with hundreds of babies under the tail sometimes.

It's bad enough, one might be looking for Moses.

NOT food. (all fuzzy legs, wings, exoskeleton, and full of yellow puss)

These are too small to cook and eat     they are about 1 1/2" long     I put on a headlight and a heavy duty work glove and just pick them up anyway I can grab em       put em in a 5 gallon bucket as I walk along picking them up    sure helps cut down on the crawfish chimneys sticking up all over the place.

never ate at a crawfish boil or all you can eat but wanted to when in gulf shores AL area local bar had it going on but the wife and 2 younger kids passed on it after seeing their whole bodies and such.  A few locals at the bar were gobbling them up like popcorn had a HUGE mound full of the yucky stuff on a plate they not eating

I hear they taste good but unfortunately did not find out.  I like shrimp and calamari and most fish but dislike lobster for some reason.    We did try alligator though while down there and did not care for it, was o.k., but something I would not order specifically off the menu too many times.

If we are ever at a crawfish boil together....can I have your share of crawfish too?

I've seen crawfish in VA that looked like small lobsters.

Most are much smaller.

They tend to live in small creeks and streams.

Most here in lower Tx are in ditches and yards.   If they are anywhere there are fish they get eaten

Still raining here for 9 days now.    80 percent chance of rain tomorrow evening forcasted.    Went out again tonight inbetween rains and caught another 68 crawfish in about an hour overall.   Thats 528 crawfish Ive taken out of about an acre of land with still lots more in the ground that got away into their holes before I could get to them.    No wonder I am having slab problems.

Manoman.  It has rained here in thej Houston area everyday since I posted this about crawfish.   Supposed to rain daily thru next Wednesday.   It doesnt rain all day but we been getting around an inch everyday.     Got about an inch and a half yesterday evening so I went crawfishing again last night and in 45 minutes caught snother 102 crawfish.   That totals 630 crawfish outa my yard since all this rain started.   This is just amazing.    Looks like Im gonna half to put on my raincoat to get in a ride if this dont stop soon.
