Author Topic: I take manifold STILL leaking  (Read 1000 times)

A couple of weeks ago, I asked about changing the o-rings on the intake manifolds. The directions you all gave made the task real easy.  Only problem is, the left rear still begins weeping, shortly after a mile or so. I purchased an o-ring set from Redeye. It says “Bag H, o-rings for intakes, Valkyrie 1500 C, CT, CF.
So my question is, is there a slightly thicker set, or, can I add a gasket seal outside the o-ring, or make a gasket to fit the outer shape of manifold, to finally stop this leak?
As always, all help greatly appreciated.
(The leak is from just behind the outermost 8mm bolt)

First, I would check the bolts are tight.  Which you probably did.

Then I'd remove the leaking intake and check the o-ring is correctly in place.

Then I'd swap it with another to see if the leak travels with it or not.

If all of that produced no remedy, I'd probably stop looking at it Smiley

I've never used red eye, but many have and they seem to have excellent product.

I wouldn't add any gasket or larger o-ring, but maybe someone has and will chime in.

With the intake runner off , fine grit sandpaper on a flat surface and make sure the o-ring area is flat. Check the mating surface for burrs also.

I think they got grooves for the o-rings to seat in. Doesn't guarantee that installing the chrome runners won't fold the o-rings out from their grooves though.

This would be my guess. It’s easy to knock them out of the groove while installing them.

Thanks all. Did as the prez suggested, fine sanding on flat steel surface, switched to new o-ring and... WALLAH! Leak has stopped! Now to enjoy this hot sunny day......
