Howdy all - a great way to start my activity on the forum. I have a new to me '02 and I just finished changing the oil (rotella 15w-40 - previously on M1MC 10w-40), and when I started it the first time to let the oil pressure rebuild and regulate everything was ok (had to top off as the oil was just at the bottom of the stick). Topped off, and now when I don't have the clutch level pulled in i hear a noise from the front. It grabbed my attention, but I don't know if it's always been there or not as i usually have ear plugs in by the time I start. However the fact I seemed to notice it this time tells me it wasn't there before. Am i hearing things or is the fat lady just not happy with the new oil? It's a "mechanical rotational sounding noise" Thanks for the help - hoping to head off to WY tomorrow, but now I'm hesitant

Forgot to say - used OE Honda filter, and I did end up putting the 4 qt in to get the oil up to just under the top line (maybe toouch?)

I think you're OK. It's the transmission components whirring around. (I kinda like the sound.)

Maybe this describes your situation? The clutch is "engaged" when the lever is not pulled in. Engaged means the engine is turning parts around in the transmission. When the transmission is in neutral, the clutch can be engaged, the bike will not go forward, but you can hear the parts turning around in there. Disengage the clutch by pulling the lever in and the parts stop turning so the bike is quieter. This is Honda normal.

excellent! thank you for the quick replies and corrections on my backwards clutch description. I'll give her a ride tonight before the trip tomorrow and glad to be back on track.
I did ride it and the clutch and everything operated perfectly and while under "heavy load"
Thank you again

Just to be clear, you are checking the oil with the bike held upright, in the riding position, right?

Correct - let it run for 2-3 mins after fill, sit for 5 mins, and then in riding position for the check - it's at the top fill line.

I am told that Goldwings and Valkyries transmissions have square cut transmission gears. They are supposed to be stronger and last longer, and work reliably in wet clutch bikes. They do make more noise however. It is a sound I have come to associate with freedom.

All of mine make the noise.
All of my GL1100/1200 motors did as well.

Just an update on the Valk - no problem at all with the oil change - if anything, she's happier than ever with good clean shifting and smooth sailing. Took her all around the Beartooth highway, pryors, and big sky country in MT a few weeks ago. She sure makes it easy to loose track of the miles. Will be posting pics on my personal page.
Thank you to everyone for the feedback and reassurances

I used T6 5w-40 for 12 yrs. until the EPA mandate (2017) version went in my bike. More tranny noise and harder shifting. Replaced @ 100 mi. Valvoline dino broke down @ 3,000 mi. Using Mobil 1 synthetic and all is well so far. Shopped around and got it on sale @ Pep Boys for $8 a qt. if my memory serves me right.
