When rebuilding carburetors do you use adhesive on the bowl gaskets or what would you use.

I used a little red and tacky grease to hold them in place. Don't know if it matters but also kept each carbs parts separated for reassembly.

like itsblue said a very very thin layer of red rubber grease. You dont want to introduce anything that could break free and clog a jet or passage way.

I used the recommended 3M 847 on the first carb set I rebuilt. It cost $16 for 5 oz. It is very difficult to apply without overrun. Then I had to clean up the gasket and surface before installing.

I have since rebuilt 6 more sets of carbs. I have not used the adhesive. I use Redeye's kits and clean the bowl groove with the plastic pic. I then use the test tools he sends to test the seal. The only thing I have done during assembly is dip the gaskets in Seafoam. I haven't had any reports of leaks on any of the carb sets.

My logic:
1. The surface on the carb body does not have adhesive from the factory.
2. The glue is messy, and if one were to leave any residue in the bowl area, it could introduce foreign material into the carb and plug a jet or a passage.
3. it works without it.
4. I test the seal to verify it will hold a vacuum.
