I know there was good alternator as while there Troutdue and MitchO were working on my fog light problem which turned out to be a bad relay  And battery showed good health on the multimeter

Thanks guys they did a great job.  Very grateful for the time they spent helping me and others

But yesterday, while showing the red (Stan's bike) which wouldnt start I went over to my 01 which sits in my garage and surprise it was dead as can be.  No lights even on the dash.  I'd ridden from inzane 570 miles Thursday the 17th.  WTF?

Put it on my smart charger and it went up to good reading after 4 hrs then went to start and nothing at all

Now the charger shows dead battery and not taking a charge set overnight at 8amp

So need a good battery alternative as this is now the 3rd Yausa battery not to last 3 yrs and I wont buy another as their quality is just no good anymore  And yes if I ever go 3 weeks without riding I overnight the battery at 2 amps with the smart charger

Oss,
I have purchased batteries for the Valk & my V-Strom from this place and when the F6Bneeds a new battery, this is where I'll get it. I received very fast service.

The Yuasa is a good battery Evan, but any battery allowed to go dead repeatedly will fail early.

Mine sit on tenders 24 X 7 when home, and all my Yuasas last 5-8 years.

(But my bike shed is not attached to my house.... though I have not lost a shed to electrical fire either.)

What brand charger do you have?

I first bought the Battery Tender, after all, EVERYONE seemed to use this on their MC and while working with TELUS Mobility, this is what the Techs used on the battery maintainers on the cell tower battery back ups. Within a year, it showed my MC battery as dead.

I bought a CTECK, and put that on the same battery, and it worked, charged right up. No problem for another 3 years. I still have the CTECK, and have no idea where that BT is any longer.

Upon others trying out batteries for the Valkyrie, I think it was the EverStart, got for only $50 or so, and it's still working for me after 2 years, but not much riding, and a dead alternator.

BatteryMINder   it can tell difference between lead /Odyssey/Agm
It desulfates, can go 2 4 or 8 amps and tells me status of battery

like this but did not pay that price

I buy Yuasa batteries exclusively, they are always good quality for me.  Always w/o acid installed so it sits on the shelf with no shelf time decay until needed - then acid filled.  Give it the proper first charge with a manual charger per the battery instructions.  Avoid ever draining lead-acid batteries down as that will kill a battery - just a few times and it won't hold a charge anymore. They can be restored to some level if you desulfate them with appropriate power/time via a good manual charger.  If I have a charged battery with low use I plug a low power charger into the garage door opener light and with every use there's 5 minutes of charge.  The door is cycled several times a day.  I have a standby battery on that method now.

I like that. 5 min cycles, probably 4 times a day. Not overly charging.

Won't work in my townhouse complex, but good for an at home system year round.

I replaced the battery last year - for the peace of mind after I discovered that my Fat Lady was still running on its first battery (Yuasa manufactured 1999).
This old battery still is able to start the engine (and is kept for emergencies or to help one out).

Regardless of battery manufacturer I'd recommend installing a battery monitor that logs every start and can give you an indication of battery health and early warning of alternator fail before you get stranded.

See Screenshots (German app setup).

B) startup of 1 year old battery
C) Alternator testing (voltage idling and at 2K rpm)

I would check the alternator while at idle and at higher rpm’s to make sure it’s not overcharging. I had a bike that would put out almost 17v at higher rpms and killed my battery. Tested fine at lower rpm’s.

Yep, you’ll find a lot of yuasa fans on this forum, I am one. Something just sounds a little off with your bike to because the description of how the thing just died and then you charged it and then it died again. There are such things as defective batteries but I’m wondering if this one’s about your bike itself. Everybody’s putting in their two cents, there’s my 1.5  Grin

Good point. You can choose the running rpm at altenator test as high as you want  (over 2K was just the recommendation by the app)
Any possible overcharge is saved by the system in permanent (24/7) or in trip log, which are automatically transmitted once a day to the cell phone when coming within Bluetooth range of the bike.

15 bucks well invested in my opinion.

I read much hatred on Chinese online shops here, so you may search for yourself at AliExpress or similar wholesalers for a budget price.

Following Wal-Mart link is double the price:

Sun of a gun

A week on the smart charger and the bike starts and runs having been desulfated

Took the battery out of the 99 which has a dead cell and then put a 4 yr old battery that I thought was
dead on that same charger for a week and now the 99 starts and runs as well.

Did feel that one of the terminals had a loose connection and brushed it with the copper scraping tool till nice and shiny

So when the new battery finally arrives should be a nice spare

I put all my batteries on recondition mode using a CTEK charger every 6 months as general maintenance. If they don’t pass the CTEK testing they go away.
