I'm unsure if this should go on General or 1800 specific forum. In any case, here it goes...

Today I went to check a Rune for sale near home. The bike had low miles (<10K), no rusted parts a few dings in the gas tank but nothing else I noticed.

What is the main concern is that it has 2 broken bolt heads in the valves cover (please see photos below).

Is that something easy to fix or is it a main blocker (pun intended), requiring drilling a bolt in the engine block, etc?

The asking price is 16K + fees.

From inspection:
a) Brake/clutch fluid looked dark (at least from the reservoir inspection window).
b) Didn't feel clicking or rocking in the handle bars while turning left <--> right with the bike stopped.
c) Can push the bike on neutral (i.e. FD feels fine, but would really need to remove the wheel to be 100% sure).

Impressions while riding:
a) It shifts smoothly.
b) Idles nicely.
c) Rear brake wasn't working, was really low before engaging (maybe needs bleeding?).
d) No weird noises.
f) Front brake was fine (similar to my ST1300).

From the pic it doesn’t look broken. But missing.

While some dealers won't touch anything over 10 years old, and many dealers suck, I'd want to run it by a good dealer mechanic to get a 2d opinion inspection, and estimate for repairs.

Though they are rare, price seems a bit high (to me).

Personally, I think money spent on a newer Valk, or F6B would be a better investment.

Runes have no shield, back seat, bags or storage of any kind.

You cannot inspect the drive splines by removing the rear wheel. The wheel is held on with lug nuts and the drive remains completely sealed.

The bike seems rather neglected. I think if I really wanted that bike it would have to be for a whole lot less

I dont think it has any thing it actually holds that is important. You could just take a short 10MM bolt screw it in and put a chrome cap on it. It would keep the look without any real work.

I like the Rune and have come close to buying one several times. I’m not a wrench turner myself but when I buy a bike I’m looking for an owner that shows pride in the bike and work done to it. Even a little annal in details. I’d run from that bike. Lot of nice Runes out there. Most with low mileage. Several can show you everything they have done to the bike. These bikes were very expensive and most bought to collect.  Dan
