After being the engineer in charge of all plant construction of the largest steel mill in MI, the folks retired to to FL.  After my dad got a load of the inept leadership of his condo association, he ran and won the leadership role.  This was followed by huge resistance by the majority of residents on spending any money for anything.  But in five years, the condo went from near insolvency and decrepitude, to perfect maintenance and a surplus in budget.

Of course my mom was seriously not amused, since he had spent 40 years at work, then spent the same hours working at home in his his retirement.  And the little old ladies enjoyed dad's company and were always asking him to come over for coffee to look at their garbage disposal.   Grin

Yep, we're going thru something similar. Our community in Florida is kinda the same. A few of us have been working to get some needed maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules set up and funded. Some folks just refuse to see the future and do not want to fund any such things. We're making progress though regardless of the arguments.

Just one story I remember my dad telling me was their painting contractor saying that two coats of paint could be applied with one think coat.  My dad told them that however thick their first coat was, they were going to let it dry and then paint a 2d coat, and they wouldn't get paid until it was.

But we always did it this way here.

Not anymore you don't.

He also took on the Punta Gorda Isles city engineer, and won (on a seawall design and construction).

I drove concrete truck in Colorado for a couple years. I am Not a contractor But I worked with a lot of contactors. Non State jobs Mostly But Not all used bare rebar. State County and City jobs used mostly coated rebar But Not All jobs called for it. Concrete strength was determined by sack count or P S I desired after so many weeks curing. Drying time and curing time Are Very different. I used to test core samples a predetermined time line after initial pour. I also used to test the different gravel mixes by size to make resonably certain at ant given time the percentage of the different sizes of aggreate were somewhat the same. Concrete generates heat while drying/curing. Also most of the contractors I worked with were Huge on over engineering a lot of the projects. The Civil jobs had Very Strict guidlines already in place we were Not Allowed to deviate from. Some local jobs were overseen by building inspectors. What the video showed Before collaspe and after collaspe are to me-Not a contractor-IS Very Disturbing. All that money for rent/purchase and damn you just Know lawsuites Will be forthcoming but No amount of money can replace LIFE.  Cry RIDE SAFE.

I wonder how much money they spent on making the place look pretty with landscaping etc as it was falling apart.

Good Question Paul. Better pretty than safe?? The man that took the pictures can Not be the only one that saw the spalling concrete and exposed rebar. When I worked building maint I had a LOT to be aware of on 2 trips a shift with 11 buildings and 2 lift stations on site. I M H O weren't just one ball that was dropped! RIDE SAFE.
