Some nights when sleep doesn't come, I'll go on Youtube and just browse a bit trying to find something of interest. Lately I've been watching some baseball clips, fascinated by some of the plays, but also a bit disgusted by actions of the umpires. My personal feelings are...they often toss a player or mgr. when they don't have the balls to admit they're wrong, in many cases won't even take a second look at it. I think the umps should be held to an even higher level of responsibility for their actions, or lack thereof, than the players & mgrs. Don't recall the game or player, but all the pitcher did was glare at the home plate ump. Never said a word, made no gestures...just looked at him with a scowl on his face. The batter was nowhere near the box at the time when suddenly the ump motioned to the pitcher and tossed him out of the game. For what? I know the penalty would have been tremendous but if it had been me, that ump would have been decked before I left the field. At least then he'd have a reason for tossing me. If you don't have the balls to face up to your mistakes, find another job where you don't have to. Maybe run for Congress!  2funny

Umpired years ago. Umpire coordinator for our local youth ball organization.
Just a perspective from an umpire's point of view.

The game is seen only from the perspective of an umpire. Not the coaches, players, or fans.

Judgement calls, balls and strikes, safe or out, cannot, by rule, be appealed unless the umpire who makes the call appeals it them self to another umpire.

Ejecting a player or coach. If a player or coach conducts themself in a manner that would create a bias toward that team by the umpire, ya get tossed.

Mis-application of rules can be appealed. A pitch that is called a ball that the batter swings at would be an example. Most common are base awards that are questioned. Is it from time of pitch or time of hit kind of thing.

Bad calls get made. Lots of times you can't undo them. Kinda like life.

Once the umpire walks on the field, it is their kingdom.

That's my problem with the entire scene. Over time I've heard that very comment in different forms; "you don't like how I call it...say one word and you're out. Makes no difference to me...one word and you're out, my call is always final...and right." Many umps have that same attitude and have no business calling the shots.

nowadays in high school sports is getting pretty serious arguing with an ump either fan or coach or player and legal action can happen calling the cops even in jail if gets out of control.  Not super proud of it, but my last high school game baseball I got ejected for arguing with a totally BLIND homeplate umpire I was catcher tagged the guy coming at me very clearly with my glove with ball in and tossed him aside 10 feet behind home plate.  I waited for the call OUT from ump and the guy slid behind me touching plate ump said SAFE.    I called ump every name in the book and said he is totally blind trying to appeal the call with 2nd base ump, a NO go so kept bitching and got tossed out of the game, oh well.  Lost that game as well should've won, oh well.

My uncle umped profesionally all over the area in his spare time and he was blind as a bat.  He once umped one of my games and me being catcher he took a riddling from me behind homeplate to the point a few times him saying BALL when my glove did not move one bit I took my glove with ball in it after baseball pitch and stood up, walked glove not moving by homeplate and showed my uncle the ball and glove was between knees and waist and in middle of the plate, clearly a strike.  He was super pissed at me for calling him out several times told me to knock it off or in big trouble.    Just for that,  I let a few baseballs slip right on by me hitting him in the facemask.  He got super pissed at that also told him quit being blind as a bat.  the ump cannot say NOTHING for me not catching the ball behind homeplate hitting him in the facemask or shoulder pad, oopsie I missed catching the ball.... LOL

I once umped a fast pitch softball tournament game age 20 or so between 2 powerhouse jarhead teams very serious on winning for 2nd/3rd place teams that traveled semi-pro all over.  I swear I had 10 close calls on the bases and every single call was correct in my eyes.  Me being only age 20, a sub to relieve normal ump needed a break from 95 degree heat,  them age 35 or so and 2x's my size they argued with me trying to appeal with homeplate ump.  Finally, me keeping quiet the home plate ump yelled at them saying ONE MORE WORD and you are all out of the game.  That shut them up.  AFter the game,  both teams apologized to me for being a-holes knowing the calls were correct.  I surely earned my 10 bucks umping that game.
