I’m probably gonna sell my Valkyrie, if I get my price, in which case I’ll have a VTX, a Suzi dual sport and ?? in my corral.  My ‘98 Tourer is unquestionably the best motorcycle I’ve ever owned or am likely to. And you guys are the best forum I’ve ever been a member of. If I buy another Valk, or just don’t get a buyer for my current one, I’ll be back here for sure.

If it's the best you've owned, why sell and then look at something else? Wouldn't that be like trading in Scarlett Johanssen for Rosie O'Donnell?

Lol The problem is Scarlet here is a senior citizen.  And for Rosie to be my 1800 VTX, she’d need to lose a few pounds

I bought it seven years and 70,000 miles ago (just turned over 98K). It’s been a great ride as I said, but I think it’s time to let her go because she’s getting very tired. It’s either sink a lot of money into it —and I’m having trouble finding parts —or let her go.  I just did both tires, so I would keep it for another year, but if I can sell now I will.

Your bike is only now starting to break in. 98k miles is nothing for them, you can easily get another 100k out of her.  If you don’t mind the maintenance, I wouldn’t let her go.

Only 70k miles, good grief man...the trike I bought last fall had just shy of 69k on it and I didn't hesitate. I now have surpassed 70k and then some and planning another trip in a week or two. Referring to it as being a "senior" at 70k might apply if it had been in a flood or some other major event.

My bike has 98K on it (not 70 I’m the one who put 70), and It’s 23 years old it’s a senior citizen. Just look at what Valkyries are selling for especially anything with more than say 50K miles you’re lucky to get $3000. And if I put $1000 into it, which for suspension and final drive parts that would be about the minimum it would need (and yes it is hard to find those parts right now see for yourself), I won’t get anything back from that investment if I ever sell it in the near future. So I’m ready to move on to something else.  If I want another Valkyrie I can have one for around $4500 it’ll only have 20-30K miles on it.  That bike would have some resale value, so putting a $1000 into it would be a Much better use of funds.  But the fact is, I’m ready to move onto a different bike. I have a VTX already and I like Yamaha royal stars, so I might just go with one of those as a back up bike

Depending on how much lucre you have available, look at the GL1800 'Wing...7spd DCT version.

I test-rode both 6spd manual and DCT Tour versions at Mid-Ohio Vintage Days this past weekend, and if I was in the market for a touring bike I'd choose the latter model hands down. It's very well executed.

I'm also partial to the Road Glide but have been hearing negative press about the M8 motor, so that one's out of the running until the issues get sorted.

Final drives: At same event a couple of years ago I scored a serviceable unit for the princely sum of $75. About the only other things you need as spares are a U-joint, drive shaft and driven wheel flange plus damper rubbers.

Shocks are wear items. I'm going to look into a pair of Harley touring air shocks for replacement on my Tourer when its I/S-model shocks finally wear to the point of replacement. That, or 440HDs. Etc.

tfrank59's right... nothing about it would be an investment.

I doubt I'd get very much for the Log Truck.

I keep on putting $ in mine, not because I think I'll ever get it back,
but because that's the only way I know to have a Valkyrie  Wink  coolsmiley ...

tfrank59's right... nothing about it would be an investment.
I remember the Harley crowd of the late 90s going on about how their Evo-motored Big Twins were an "investment".

I've also seen said Evo-powered models recently going for a small fraction of their MSRP, even the limited-run stuff. If buying a common street motorcycle is someone's "preferred investment track", they'd better get themselves to a financial counselor most ricky-tick.

You're going to ride, it's going to co$t. Either spend the money in maintaining your old bike or buy something new. I've thrown a leg over hundreds of different models of motorcycles in the 50+ years that I've been riding, and of all those only two really stand out:

The Valkyrie. And the Concours 14. I have several of each, and will continue to acquire more of each plus spare parts to keep them on the road until such time that I can't ride. A dual-sport is in the future, maybe an older Road King/Road Glide combo too - but the Valks aren't going anywhere.

Part of the reason I’m ready to change bikes is that my VTX with those Progressive Springs rides soo nice I got spoiled. Plus I know once I roll over 100K on the Valkyrie it’ll drop in price to where there’s almost no chance of selling at that point.   We all know the longevity of a Valkyrie but most of the riding public doesn’t it’s not an easy sell.  And it’s not like it’s this great big investment I’m worried about but it gets to the point where if all I can get is $1500 for the thing I might as well just keep it until I die. Yeah, you need to dump the Valk Tfrank. If you see the value of the bike in dollars someone will give you for it, you've already lost. The only reason to keep an old Valkyrie is because you really like and appreciate them.     Find something you like better.

Well it’s obvious I already found a bike that I like better, my VTX 1800. I’m not sure why I started this thread to begin with, it was mainly to respectfully sign off, in the event that I can sell my Valkyrie for the price I want.

Don’t take it personal. And don’t sign off, even if you do sell the Valkyrie. I get it. I came very close to buying a new GoldWing a few years back.

No you guys are fine, I’m just being flaky. I’m an ex marine I have thick skin. The fact is I had my eye on another bike but it’s sold, so I’m probably just gonna keep mine although I’m leaving it up for sale if I can get my price, and I’m pretty firm on it.  And I suppose one motive I had for this thread was to hear your guys reasons why I shouldn’t sell, and as usual you guys made your point LOL

Glad to hear it, I had no business being that harsh Tfrank,, the way I know it is that immediately after I wrote it, I went riding and dumped four rivets out of my clutch!! Grin  I hope you'll forgive me.

I’ll check in from time to time, but I am pretty active on the VTX forum for obvious reasons. It’s kind of weird almost like getting a divorce or something and a little ironic that guys who ride the bike I have often call it their “ex” lol.

Well here’s a little clip of my VTX 1800, and I’m talking about a battery that I just pulled out of it because it needed a new one and I put in a yuasa of course. My other bike now is a kowalski Vulcan 2000.  Sort of miss my Valkyrie but hey like I said it’s kinda like you have a relationship and then it ends and then you move on LOL. You guys ride safe!

I might as well just keep it until I die. Grin
Which is precisely what I, and perhaps others responding here, plan to do.   The way I look at it, is after 22 years and over 200,000 km, I can either spend $5k or whatever and  keep aquiring good wear parts and replacing when necessary , or spend $10k, 15k, 20 k on a new(er) bike...one that I may like a lot, but won't have the sentimental value or classic appeal of my old Valk. Since I don't plan on ever selling it and still get the same joy out of riding it as I did when I first got it so long ago, it's a no-brainer dollar-wise as well for me to keep it and maintain it. It's also my "new" bike...my other is a 78 GL1000 Smiley
That's me though...everyone has different  thoughts about that. You can still appreciate everything the 1500 Valk was and is, and move on to something newer or different....many have, and are happy with their choice. Good luck with the sale of yours, and also with finding a good replacement that suits your needs going forward  cooldude

Thanks. I found two bikes that I really enjoy riding in place of my Valkyrie. One is a VTX 1800, the other a Kawi 2000. I might get another valk someday who knows.

whatever floats your boat I say go for it.   cooldude

wife thought I was nuts buying 8 years ago a 250cc scooter for 1 grand dirt cheap.  Some 10K miles later and I returned my investment on it already in gas savings am sure and can still sell it for 1 grand if ever wanted to.  3 years ago bought a suzuki burgmann 650cc scoot for ONLY 1995 only 8K miles on it some old guy had it only drove it he said 3-4 x's per year on long door county trips with wife on back.  snatched that up and some 10K miles later I drive it more this past 2 years than both of my Valks since easier to handle, plenty fast enough, and good storage and comfort, especially now that both my hips are bothering me and feel iffy on 800lb. bikes right now.  Today actually I offered wife to go for Valk ride and she questioned my leg/hip strength so we stayed home watching the Packers get their butt kicked.  Should've went for a cycle ride instead for sure.

I have a Valkyrie, and a Buell Lightening.  BOTH are in proper storage. The Valk is too big for the type of riding I would do now, and the Lightening......well......either it is idling, or WIDE open.   Basically a racing bike......

But I still get the urge to go for a short ride on occasion.  I once had a Sportster,  and I kind of would like one again!!  I rode the hell out of my old Sportster (traded it in for the Lightening when it first came out),  and it was perfect for "City" driving.

I also need something "in between" now!  But I am not selling either the Valk or Buell.....YMMV......
