So, a couple of weeks ago I was able to find a Metzeler ME 888 Ultra for the rear to replace one of mine 9 years old tired with 7-8K miles on it. Then this week, thanks to a member in here i was able to find a front tire as well, but it had to be a Shinko SE890, which I installed it yesterday. Went for a short ride this morning to test the new Shinko ( have already done 150 miles on the new rear Metzler ) and to my surprise the handling was much different, and not necessarily for the better. First of all, when i compared the new tire next to Metzeler still mounted on the rim, I noticed that the Shinko is about one inch shorter than the previous Metzleler Marathon ME880, although the specs are exactly the same, 150-80 R17 on both.
I don't know if it is because the Shinko is brand new, but in the 10-15 miles i did this morning the handling was very different. The treads of the tires have some similarity, but when leaning the bike even slightly on a long curve, it felt like if the bike was Deeping into the road on its front. Very unusual feeling that did not gave me much confidence, but I wonder if it just a matter of getting used to it. On my fist impression I don't think I would want to take a ride on the twisty mountain roads just yet. I would like to hear from others who have the same Shinko front tire installed and a different brand in the rear. Thanks for any experience sharing.

Have on on Ruby, almost to the wear bars. No issues whatsoever, even on the twisty mountain roads around here. I'm running an 8-ply light truck tire on the rear.

I’ve worn out about four of those so far. My three Valks all have them mounted right now.

Ok, thanks all. I'll put a 100+ miles tomorrow and see how it acts after it is broken in a bit. I guess it is a matter of getting used to it then, but what a difference a tire can make. At first i even thought the tire shop may have mounted it the wrong direction... I inflated at 39 PSI while the previous ME880 was at 40, but the Metzeler seemed to be a more solid tire just by the look of it.

Well, obviously I find the 890 Journey adequate. I scrape the pegs regularly on my Valks. It is NOT a premium tire, but for the money, I do find it perfectly acceptable.

I’m looking into buying the shinko journeys for both of mine. I have read it takes 100-150 miles to break them in. Other than slightly shorter mileage, they seem to rate pretty good. Going to order a set for the interstate and see how they go. About 1/3rd the cost, my parts guy said he sells them to a lot of wingers with no complaints and they buy more. Sounds promising to me.

Went for a 130 miles this morning with my new front Shinko. I don't know whether the new tire got broken in or whether I'm getting used to it, but I can manage the bike better now then when I first tried yesterday. Perhaps it is like a new prescription glasses,...you need to wear them for few days to get used to them. But I still feel that the Metzeler ME888 are better tires overall. Yesterday, after just 10-15 miles of riding I was thinking of replacing it right away. After today's ride I'm thinking of giving it a longer change. And the fact that other riders have no issues with them gave me some confidence too. Let's see...

you probably wore out the slippery shiny new coating off of it first 100 miles or so. For 1/2 the price of a metzeler, I will keep using them for not much less mleage out of them. I have SE890 on rear but like the even cheaper front tire being shinko 230 tourmaster.

Ok, after my second 130 miles ride within a week apart I now have noticed no difference from my previous Marathon ME880 tires. The bike now handles well with a Metzeler 888 Ultra in the rear and a Shinko in the front. Still now sure how long it will last but if i can get 8K miles out of it I'll be a happy camper. the total price for the front Shinko was $134 including taxes and shipment. Not bad at all.

I had one once. That was enough for me.
I’m with meathead on this. I went from a Metz to Shinko and do not like it. Bike developed a shimmy above 100 that I think is the stinko. No amount of balancing seems to help. I also think the Metz stuck a little better….shinko may last longer tho. Will be going back to Metz when it’s worn out.

Every new tire I've tried on the front has release compound, and nibs. The nibs make it feel like its squirming all over the road. After a day of riding and braking, the nibs wear off and the ride drastically improves.
I'm now on my third Shinko on front, third car tire as well. I liked the shinko brand well enough that we put one on my lady's harley trike. Both tires going strong.

You have to break um in. They are squirlly at first. Put some wear on them gently for a few miles, then start pounding the curves. Rough up the sides and start riding like a bat out of hell.

My friends and I have been running Shinko tires for quite a while now and they are the only tires that we will run. Been on hot days and in heavy rain with no problems. This winter I will be getting some for the Valkyrie next.

Had another SE890 slapped on the front of the Bullet within the last month. Balanced with Stallion sealant. Handles great.
BTW, with front tires from the big name brands approaching three c-notes each, I was happy to see the Shinko SE890 remains reasonably priced.

A friend helped me mount a set of SE-890's on my 99 Standard several weeks back. Did a full final drive service also. He is very experienced in tire mounting on Valks and recommended the 890's. I have about 500 miles on them and I am a happy camper. Time will tell.

On my second one. Me, MitchO, Punisher and Smok'n Joe all had new ones when we set out for Montana (InZane) last year. Troutdude and DDT runs em too... They're pretty common on first gen valks. I'm sure many others could chime in here...
