South Carolina

« on: August 04, 2021, 12:58:42 PM »

Carolyn told me this morning: 0% chance of rain! I met Ross down
at the corner store and we headed out towards the Blue Ridge
Parkway.

We met with a little drizzle up on hiway 11. We stopped at the overlook
where South Carolina's lake-that-looks-like-a-Christmas-tree is.

I didn't bother to take a picture today. It was opaque down there,
no hint of a lake. But its all good, only a little rainy, so up the
hill we go!

We gassed up on hiway 64 and talked a little bit about maybe
going to Tilley Creek instead of The Parkway... either way, a little
rain's not a problem and the next step was up 281...

After a while we're in the middle of nowhere on 281 (T-Bird said
"This is my new favorite road!" when I took him there) and we have
to admit it is raining steadily. I was starting to get wet. Our
weather changed yesterday from August to late October in less than
24 hours. I stopped and told Ross that if we take this next pig
trail we could end up in Rosman North Carolina and roll back
down the hill to South Carolina...

The steady rain quit near Rosman...

We said a few things about potential other places to go and the
drizzle started. We headed down to South Carolina. As the rain
increased in intensity to "steady" I wished I hadn't put on my
dry gloves.

We got down to the bottom of the hill. We were both near home.
I told Ross my little man was telling me to get off my motorcycle. :-)
Near home I hit a patch or two of sunshine and I began daydreaming
about this:

Been too freaking hot and humid lately, combined with back to school preparations...

I have been using the Silverwing quite a bit though, I know it's not good ATGATT practice, but I'll hop on it in shorts and flip flops and run across town for a quick errand, been about the extent of my riding lately.

Looking forward to fall and hopefully some rides, but much as I love The Republic, I am envious of the roads in other parts of the country!

...maybe I need to look to the Texas Hill Country as a retirement location, although it is dangerously close to Austin...

It has rained pretty much all day here in Maggie Valley.

Low clouds would have made the BRP an unpleasant ride.

I used to be better at handing the heat. I don’t know if it’s just psychological or what, but since almost dying on a hike with my grandson this spring, it has just been kicking my butt. We already have a retirement location but Covid screwed that this year.

But, it’s nice to see reports from hubcap and others.  cooldude

At least someone's riding.

I've taken advantage of unbelievably cool weather (60s night, 70 mornings) in my area, to do a major scrape, seal, caulk and drylock paint my basement walkout which has been threatening to cave in for the last 30 years.  All the ants, bugs, and slugs came out to protest.  Then edged and mowed both yards.  Found a new yellow jacket nest at the base of one of my split rail fence posts, so I murdered all those guys too.  I've been taking short rides all summer, but no long ones.  And I've got more work done on my old house than I've done in many years.  It needed it.  And I need the activity and exercise.

Ever since the covid, there's been more people walking in my neighborhood than ever before.  Some compliment my work, but some ask if I'm nuts (crazy) about such work.  No, not really, but I'm retired and it's good for me physically and mentally to get off my ass and do some work every single day (almost).

Back in the August 90s any day now.

I'll be picking up T-Birds ashes in Sept. on the Clayton , Ga. ride to spread them on The Fall Color Ride in Oct.  I have a favor to ask will you take some of his ashes and take them to 281 and spread them along the ride the next time you are in the area ? I'm burning time at work to retire in Nov. It's possible I could meet up with you after the FCR to join you in doing this. Just got to play my cards right so I leave work with a zero balance of time I need to take.

Been almost a week and a half since My Valk has been outside.  Got in a 200 miler.  The excessive heat (95-100) plus lots of extra smoke has put a damper on going out.

She does need some exercise  and the temps are going to be good this week, BUT CA has let three fires go wild and our air quality is considered Unhealthy and very near Very Unhealthy.  Not good for old lungs to breath in much of it.   tickedoff
