I have the OEM seat on my '98 Standard with a Utopia backrest. It attaches at the 2 bolts that held the front of the pillion. I keep the pillion seat on a shelf - the bike looks so much better bobbed.
I'd like to upgrade to an Ultimate seat, but can I do that and still have room for the Utopia backrest?
Thanks.

Nope... I found that if you get your OEM seat made into a Russell, it will work. And I hear that using a Utopia without a pillion (or something else to help spread the load) could lead to a bad surprise one day while you're leaning back... I think a Corbin seat will work with a Utopia as well... -Mike

GWS I also have a utopia and an ultimate big boy, I heated up the utopia and bent it to get the right fit, then had it powder coated

Been riding with a Utopia and and I/S King Boy Ulitmate for well over ten years. Just bolted it down, slapped the seat in place and rode away. No heating or bending the backrest post. Both parts are now mounted on the trike.

Hey John I just didn’t like the way it pushed on the seat, call me weird Mine just slips right into the crook of the backrest post at the bottom, doesn't mess with the seat. I'll see if I can get a picture of it.

OK, that's one vote for "Nope, won't work", one vote for "Yup, works fine", and one vote for "Yes, but it'll take some mods".
I do appreciate everybody's input. Obviously there are more variables involved than I originally thought! Might as well order a seat and deal with whatever situation arises at the time.
Maybe I should just count my blessings and be thankful that the original seat is as good as it is. My previous bike was a Suzuki V-Strom. Great bike, but that OEM seat was absolutely unbearable - nothing but a Japanese torture device. After the first ride I had to make a new seat for it with some old foam from my pickup's front seat. Wasn't pretty, but it worked. Two years later, my nuts still thank me every time I hop on the Valkyrie!

My bike came with a whole Ultimate setup, big boy seat I think? I have never actually tried out the the back rest for the driver seat. I will give it try tomorrow because of this post. I never have tried it out.
BTW I have the OEM seats, the Ultimate seats are much better, I put the Honda seats on, the wife and I gave them a thumbs down. If anyone wants to buy some seats that look factory fresh I have them for sale.

Thanks for the pictures! They really are worth a thousand words.
"So what..." is the correct answer (for me). Now I know what I'll do.
