Good morning all,
In need of some input from the taller guys. Need to find a vehicle in the $6k - $8k range, for my son. What are you tall guys driving these days? Other than the obvious full size trucks and full size SUV's. Looking for something decent on gas and reliable that a 6'-6" 21yo kid will fit in.

Back in the late 90's I had a company car a Dodge Neon. I am 6'3" and it fit well, got great gas mileage but probably no good ones left and also not "cool" enough for the lad.

I'm 5'19" and currently have a 2008 Nissan Altima (I have to move the seat forward a bit actually, NOT put it all the way back), a 2006 Acura MDX, a 1998 Toyota Camry (Kali's car, but I can drive it without problems) and a 201X (Don't remember) Honda minivan thing (I drive it when I have to)
No leg issues in any of them.
Funny enough, the car that I had with the most leg room ever was my 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo.... With the engine in the back, they put tons of leg room in there, just looked funny getting in and out of it (Same with my 1988 MR2, but the 1993 was a bit bigger.)

I'm 6'2" tall and with the seat All the way Back and All the Way Down 600 mile days not a problem. 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8 Gen III and mid 20s around town high 20s low 30s on the highway. Figurin Any G M 3.8 Gen III about the same. And as others have stated along with 2 mechanics I respect avoid that NorthStar V 8. And as yer aware Used vehicle prices Have Gone up a bit!  RIDE SAFE. |

Doesn't help much but in your decision but.....we always thought it was comical to see a buddy of mine who is 6'6" unfold himself from his old Suzuki Samurai. Looked a lot like a clown car in a parade.

Evan-I believe the full size Fords are the same platform. We had a 78 Mercury that I did Not have to put the seat all the way back. Daughter that drove first saw the door plate with the FoMoCo and the Ford logo. She thought Mercury was a stand alone company. RIDE SAFE. |

I would go with a used early 2000's Honda or toyota SUV or a minivan. minivan's look cool right for a 20 something year old??? I have seen recently a few Honda element square box design in that 4-5K range in good shape worth buying is a 4 cylinder but 4wd if cannot find a honda crv SUV.
Not a ford fan, but been in a few Ford Flex vehicles square box design roomy to get in/out of and not too low to the ground.
biggest thing I have issues with in any car is too low to the ground to get easy in/out of regardless of height. Been in a corvette ONLY once in my life and had a VERY tough time getting UP and out of it sat way too low to the ground.

I am 6'4 and my son is on his way to 6'7, we have a dodge charger. Great ride, we both fit solid car good on fuel, well a lot better than the f150.

I'm not tall at 5'9", but I used to take my windowless van to the drive-in, back in to the spot, set the speaker, open the back doors and share a nice single mattress and pile of big pillows with my date. Bottle of Boonsfarm, bottle of Ripple. Good times.  However, some dads would not let their daughters go out with van drivers. (the smart ones) Go home and get your dad's car and come on back son. Like fifty years ago. |

B-I-L has a Jetta. Son did not fit. We have owned a couple CRV's. We love them. 1st gen i would love to find for him. 2nd gen he does not fit in as well. We had one of those too. Starting in 2007 reliability has been up and down. We have not had much luck. Probably going to go back to a Avalon. He was driving a 2000 for the last 5yrs. Good car good fit, decent mileage. Now just find the right one at the right price in decent shape. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

You will think me crazy but a mini cooper has plenty of leg room and head room. Geats great gas mileage. Only problem is standing up out of it. But that wouldn’t be an issue for a 20 yr old I drove one for about 4 yrs. the salesman that sold it to me was 6’5” and drove one. I am 6’2” and couldn’t reach the pedals with the seat all the way back. I am talking about the car not the suv type they are no as roomy. I now drive a Honda Civic back and forth to work and also has plenty of room. Then of course I also have a truck. But drive the car because of the MPG’s. |

If you can find one in GOOD shape, and they can afford the maintenance - a 1999 - 2007 New Beetle will surprise you on who / what will fit. The later Beetles where they chopped it down aren't quite as good.

VW's ARE reliable - if you keep up on the maintenance (they are not tolerant of neglect). I've got 379,000 miles on the Beetle , and 108,000 miles on our 2015 Golf ( both are TDI's).

I KNOW how Much equipment is entailed for a Fighter Pilot as I was an Emergency Equipment Tech in The Navy. It's been awhile but the last Ejection seat I worked on was a Martin Baker. Even the Pilot.Co Pilot cockpit was a bit cramped on the S2Ds and Es I flew in. And those were twin engine recips. RIDE SAFE. |
