I'm in an argument with my bike insurance, Progressive. I don't particularly like them but they work with USAA with which I have other policies. They've listed the I/S trike as a Tourer, when I told them it needed to be changed/corrected I was told the VIN came back as a Tourer. They won't change it until I show them proof that it is an I/S. I suppose it's possible that the fool that owned it originally might have stripped it down and installed an I/S wiring harness with all the extras that go with it such as the fairing, trunk, radios, etc. I'm the third owner(that I'm aware of), the PO wasn't bright enough to undertake such a task so that leaves it to any owner(s) prior to that to have done a conversion. A move I find highly unlikely...but possible. There's a lot of fools in the world.

For the record, the VIN: 1HFSC410XXA002368
Is there some sort of reference put out by Honda that shows the VIN spread for various models? Personally, I'd like to find a different insurance company. The attitude of the people I've talked to so far makes me wonder how high the pedestal is they've put themselves on.

Just for S&G I checked Progressive, they have my Interstate listed as a "Tourer" and my standard listed as a "Cruiser".

Maybe "Tourer" isn't the model name, but the class of motorcycle they consider it to be?

I did a VIN check on yours here:

http://vinexaminer.com/vincheck/?vin=1HFSC410XXA002368

(The junk about it having a bad history is just to get you to pay $$$ for the full report)

It confirms the model is GL1500CF (Which is Interstate)

I think Serk is on to it.

What they call a Tourer is likely a class of touring motorcycles and not a Valkyrie Tourer.

Ask them if they call all (1500 and up) Gold Wings tourers, and you'll have your answer.

I've never been (and never would be) with Progressive, but it was my understanding that all Valkyrie motorcycle models got a touring discount with MC insurers.  IE, no distinction between standards and tourers/interstates.  But I could be wrong.

I have precisely the same situation, with precisely the same response from Progressive.  I called and discussed it with them but got no where.  I even harbored the same fear that perhaps my I.S. was "built up" from a non-I.S. bike by a previous owner, but finally decided I was being paranoid.

Based on our stories being identical, I agree that Serk is probably correct.

I finally gave up on Progressive, it was like talking to a ripe tomato...with about as many brains. I even sent them the VIN decoding along with a step by step of how to break down my VIN to show them that it was an I/S, not a Tourer. They only show two different models, neither apply and both are incorrect to begin with. I ended up with GEICO whom I've used in the past. I got a better policy for a little less money and 1/3 the amount of down payment. When it comes to things like insurance, I usually will break the premium down into a few payments. I'd rather have my money in my bank than theirs. As for Progressive, they can KMA goodbye as of 9/3/2021. Nothing personal....  Wink

John, I've been with USAA for everything since USAF.  But when USAA stopped covering bikes, and laid all that coverage off on Progressive, I switched to Geico (years ago), and I couldn't be happier.

Not that I've ever had a bike claim in 50 years.

I get discounts for being old, MSF completion, and touring bikes, and no tickets.

I have both a tourer and interstate and the difference in 6 month PROGRESSIVE premium is less than 10 bucks difference is all yearly premium paid in full upfront does help lower the rates.   Weird how you are also in WI but I called Geico and was considerably higher than my very cheap Progressive insurance premiums on all 4-5 cycles.  I think the more cycles you have under one policy with Progressive, the cheaper the rates are overall.  I had at one time 6 cycles vs. 4 cycles under Progressive one policy and the other 5 cycles went down in price adding a 5th or 6th cycle was dirt cheap like 15 bucks more per 1 year premium is all.  I never could figure out the stupidity Progressive has understanding their policies never made sense to me.  For example, my 250cc  1 grand scooter costs more to insure than 1 of my 2 Valkyries do valued at 4-6K each and 1520cc much bigger, etc.    My 2003 suzuki burgmann 650cc scooter is the highest price insured about 10 bucks more per year than my 2001 VAlk I/S.  I think scooters are higher with Progressive than they should be, maybe they are higher risk according to their underwriting policies?

I shop regularly and was going to switch to Allstate both 5 vehicles and 5 cycles comparable rates to Progressive.  However, to get the discount having the HOME insured also,  their rates were INSANELY HIGHER like double what I am paying now.  I argued with the lady Allstate agent since I know my ex-neighbor has the EXACT same office with Allstate I got my quote from he told me his 350K value home pricing to insure with same Allstate agent was cheaper than my 170K home, now that pissed me off.  Plus he lives in yuppie vill vs. me small town in cheaper county as well I live in.   My house 1100 sq. ft small ranch home his was newer 2000 sq. ft home and double the value almost with fancier interior stuff to replace in richer area of big town.
