Elk are some of the most beautiful animals out there.
Not sure about that area but, the government was trying to re-populate elk back into areas they were before we took most of the "wild space" and/or hunted them out of the area. When stationed at Ft. Sill (long ago) U.S. Fish and Game was bringing elk back to the Wichita Mountains. We used to get tasked to take them out (Fish and Game Wardens, not the elk) in our helicopters and do game counts.
That was a highly sought after mission.

Magnificent creatures.
A few years ago I was on my way to the RoadRunner Rally in Maggie Valley and not to far from the exit ramp from I-40 to Maggie I saw one. Glad it stayed off the road, it would have been a big ouch to hit it with my V-Strom.

Wapiti. The sounds of cows and calves when the little ones are milling around in the herd and communicating back and forth is one unique sound to the ears. Going out on a subzero night with some ice fog and seeing their shadows through that grey curtain and under moonlight makes me smile all these years later. We showed my visiting sisters and their husbands the herd; they were from New England and had never seen these animals in the wild. They were amazed by their size, gentleness, and beautiful faces while out grazing through the snow.  |

Elk were introduced to Land between the Lakes in Western Kentucky at least 20 years ago.

had to do a double take off I-90 in WI 1 mile before black river falls WI and saw 2 HUGE elk about 50 yards off the road grazing. MAN, those things are huge even that far of distance. I guess ELK is in that area but going ATVing up there about 10x's now never seen one in the woods. ATV vs. Elk and Elk wins much like a vehicle.
I cannot imagine anyone mistaking them for a whitetail deer during hunting season much bigger.

Having spent the last 55 years of my life in the western part of this country, seeing elk is still enjoyable. Yeah they are big, even the cows are a lot bigger than the biggest mule deer bucks. Still get a rise in my heart beat when see them now.
I have had the enjoyment of walking up on cow elk enjoy the vegetation or just resting in the sun. Kind of cool. Seen a few bulls that would have been in the record book if harvested. Even better were the ones that were in my scope, and ended up in my freezer. Yeah they do taste great. Though do take a bit to get in freezer, many trips with backpack and lots of cutting/wrapping.

We now have a limited Elk hunt in WI. it has been tough to reintroduce them since it was decided to reintroduce the Grey Wolf at about the same time. Guess what Grey wolves are fond of eating besides moo cows? Elk calves. I thought Elk were large animals until I had a cow Moose walk over my blind (literally) while hunting mulies with a bow.

While elk hunting in WY a number of years ago, I rounded a patch of fir trees and came face to face with Ma Moose and her kid. Like 10 yards face to face. I am/was 6'4" tall and was standing on 2' of snow on snowshoes. I was looking her in the eye. Rather intimidating. It's hard to back up wearing snowshoes, especially trailer type. But it can be done. Of course was telling how good looking she was and her kid was really cute. AND yes, did have my safety off.
Not my moose, but have help carry out several of them for friends. Yeah got a hunk or two out of it.

I expect to see them up in the pine woods in the rim country in northern AZ, but I never expected to see them in the desert. We were in Chaco Canyon in the high desert of New Mexico once and saw them in the bushes that line the little stream that runs through the middle of the canyon. The green zone is only about 20 yards wide on either side of the stream, and its barren desert beyond that. -RP  |
