This seller claims that this bike is a '98. Wasn't 1997 the only year for the red and white?

I asked if it was really a 1997, and the seller replied that "My title says it's a 1998." Of course, it only has 1,300 miles on it, so the guy probably hasn't been on the bike enough to know a thing about it.

What say the rest of you?

The w in the serial number indicates 1998.
341 indicates CA model.   Pete.

Coulda swapped tins with someone and still be a '98 technically...

...or had it painted...

But to my knowledge, the maroon and ivory was the closest to that in '98...

But, if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on a tin swap in that bike's past...

It's easy.  Ask him to look at the sticker on the frame hear the trees.  It tells all.
Other than that, Pete has the answer.

Somthing strange.
The VIN are -98, but the -97 was the only year with red / white.

Just asking.....

i'm pretty sure that the fuel tank emblem is a give away for a '97 also.

if you want, we can ride out there and check!!  get some heated gear though.

The tank emblem would be correct for a '97 or a '98 (I think a '99 too, didn't they change it in '00?) My '98 Blue and Ivory has the same tank emblem...

I'm still betting on a tin swap...

I belive the 98's also had the F6 emblem.  I think changed 99.  Also, the title might say 98, meaning that is when it was first registered.  Although the vin saying 98 would be 98.  If that is the case, the tins were swapped, or repainted.

VIN breaks down as such:

1HF  = oHIo plant
SC341 = California model
6 = check digit
W = 1998
A = Marysville
1 = Production year, - 98
00083 = serial #.

For this model and this year, it should be either a Black, or a Purple/ White

I would say it has had a tin transfer..........

I haven't updated the Valkyrie Genealogy article in a while, but a California model with that S/N should be maroon and cream.  Not 100 % sure, but I base this on the fact the s/n 100074 and 100087 (the closest I have in the database to that number) are maroon and cream.

Purple/white is 97 only, not 98, I believe.

'97 is the ONLY year for the Red & Whites.  The bike pictured...as is...is a '97.

However, there are clues that this is a scam.

(1)  The guy has ZERO transactions/feedbacks.  He's never sold anything on Ebay before and he throws down with a '97 Valk for his first transaction......possible, but not likely.

(2)  He claims that it only has 1300 miles.  Unless it's been in storage all these years, that's pretty unbelievable.  Even if it had, sitting that long would bring a whole host of problems....dried seals, etc.

(3)  There's only a short, one sentence discription of the bike.  If it's that great, he'd be singing it's praises and listing all of it's attributes.

Sounds awful fishy to me.

Ask him if you can see it in person....then see what he says.

Should be lots of Valk owners in the LA area that could ride over and take a look.  It looks like from the coat of dust it is in a auto body shop or repair shop.  Anyone recognize the shelving/racks sitting next to the bike....what would they be used for?

Baldwin Park is not too far from a cluster of SoCal VRCC guys.  Check out the SoCal board and see who would be willing to do some recon.

Yes it is possible. I once knew a coupla guys who switched painted parts, as Serk has tried to tell y'all. Maroon and Cream '98 became a Red and White and the '97 red and white became a maroon and cream.  They even had a contest on the dyno at the first INzane in Ohio. I thought the red and white got taken out by a left-turning van in NC or Georgia or thereabouts a few years back. See if the bike you're looking at has a salvage title. The bike I knew had way more than 1300 miles on it tho.
