Last year I purchased a non running 2000 Valkyrie IS from Ross (Dapres). He informed me that it had been sitting for several years that he knew of. Shortly after getting it home I tore into it to try and get it running. Carbs needed rebuilt. I rebuilt all the carbs with new Slow speed jets and float needles. took it for a test ride and it ran fantastic.  After getting it running I sold it to me Stepson Anthony. During the ride to store it at his house last fall I found that the clutch was slipping. I informed him to change the oil to which he did. Fast forward to this spring he tried to move it and the brakes were locked up. When we tried to get it on my trailer the clutch was slipping again. We got it to my house where we proceeded to rebuild the clutch and brake hydraulic system and to repair what else needed to be done. I took it for a short ride and it was fine.
Afterward he took delivery of it again. Three weeks ago myself,my brother and Anthony went for a ride. We made it approx 10 miles until the clutch gave out again. We tried to baby it back home but it failed completely. It was real hot at this point.  Had to trailer it the rest of the way home. Today we tore into the clutch. The friction plates don't look bad but several of the steels are blue. It got hot. I just ordered all new frictions, steels and the spring. I think what happened is the owner previous to Ross used automotive oil and by leaving it in there all this time it ruined the clutch. Me not changing it right away and riding it probable did it in. So word of advise. Always Change the oil on a bike that has been sitting and make sure to use proper M/C rated oil. If you don't it could cost you.

And these are NOT limited to "automotive" oil.

Honda's own HP4 Synthetic comes in With and Without Moly flavors. A number of other motorcycle-specific oils do as well.

Bottom line: Read the labels on the bottles before you dump ANYTHING into a vehicle.

I completely went through the hydraulic system. Rebuilt the master cylinder. Disassembled and cleaned the slave. New dot 4 fluid. It worked fine after that until it got hot then it failed.
