New to me 2000 IS here.

Bike was recently painted, black, looks good. Q: GF wants to ride, long weekends. Anyone know the best way to protect the panniers from boot scruff until I can score some of those chrome, tubular racks for the lids?

TIA!

Don't wear extremely hard-soled boots. Purposed-designed motorcycle boots might "smudge" but they don't scrape or gouge things they're rubbed across.

Option 2: She screws the bags up, she touches the bags up (and I mean 'prep to perfection'). That lesson usually needs to be learned ONCE in order to sink in.

The proper way for a passenger to get on the bike is for the rider to be seated with the bike level (both feet down stable), the passenger puts her left hand on the riders shoulder and right hand on the trunk, stands up on on the passenger's board/peg with the left foot (gaining height), and steps through over the seat with the right foot.  Reverse to get off.  Practice a couple times.

Do it right and don't scuff the bags.

If they are too small/weak to do this maneuver, have them wear a pair of heavy socks over their boots.

You can stick some 3M clear tape on the bag lids to hinder rubs.

3M makes a clear shield that is applied much like a WRAP on cars. Auto body shops will know who can do this for you.
