Author Topic: New radiator chrome interferes with fork rotation  (Read 2363 times)

I installed a chrome raditor grill and top by Show Chrome.  I found that when rotating the forks from stop to stop (or attempting to), they hit both the newly installed grill & top.  The supplier claims they fit (which they do), but it does certainly create interference.  It doesn't appear the ratiator top can be tipped back further.  My only thought was to add a spacer on both sides of the turning radius slot, limiting fork travel 1/8" both right and left.  Surely this isn't a new problem for the Tourer, as this is an unmolested bike.  Does anyone have a successful mod that will allow full steering rotation and keep the chrome look, or would this not make a significant difference in turning radius?

I've never heard of that except when adding either driving lights or after market turn signals. Both sometimes fit a bit lower on the fork, depending on which model/brand, etc.  I have a top cover and a Rattlebars grill, the grill protrudes farther than just about anything out there and I don't have that problem. A couple pictures of what you have and how the forks are at full stop might help us.

Keep in mind that occasional banging of the parts will affect the parts in question and the weakest part will show the brunt of the damage, which in this case would be the radiator.

Just sayin'

Doorman, I had the same problem when I installed that top piece. I found my side chrome covers
(with the reflectors) were loose.  I tightened them up and problem was gone. If yours are loose, you must remove the reflector to tighten them. I reinstalled with 3M double stick tape. Hope your fix is as easy as mine was Wink

I believe I have it and thanks for the feedback.  The covers were not completely tight.   This did gain most of what was needed, however it still touched just a bit.   I wound up removing the cover over the fork rotation stops behind the headlight.   I added two very small rare-earth magnets from Ace Hardware that sucked on and are stuck tight to the steel right and left stops.   I cannot tell any difference in steering radius and no more banging.
