Since I’ve told this story.

I was active duty AirForce in 1997 when the Valkyrie made its debut. Me and a Chief (friend of mine) fell in love at first sight with this new bike.  We both knew we had to have a Valkyrie. I wanted a bee, he wanted a red and white.

We spent our breaks in the Chief’s office looking at his Valkyrie brochures. Lol. Well in 1997 I had two kids, one in high school and one going into high school. My wife at the time was not going for it.

Fast forward to 2002, one kid out of HS and the other a senior. Wife says ok, you can start looking for a Valkyrie.

Ok, so I settled down, ready for an extended internet search. I figured a couple of weeks at least. I mean I wanted to find the right bike the first time.

So the kids are in bed, I go out to the computer and type in “used Valkyrie Florida”

BOOM!  Up pops Pompano Pats in South Fl somewhere. I think Ft Lauderdale. They had two Valkyrie’s. One was a black ‘99 with like 10K and a red and white with 5K on the clock. I immediately knew I wanted the red and white. But, hold on, I’m 5 minutes into my search for my dream bike. Could this be it, really!

So I show my wife this picture and she loved it

So, with sweaty palms I call the shop. The lady was really nice. I wanted more  pictures, she emailed them immediately. I wanted to hear it run. They started it and held the phone.

To make a long story short she said “If you want it you have 5 minutes. My driver is leaving and we can put it on the trailer and you’ll have it tomorrow.

Holy crap!! I wasn’t ready for this. After shipping, a Hondaline windshield and the usual tax and license the cost was $ 9,990

So, having somewhat of an out of body experience I hear myself say yes, I’ll take it. I’ll overnight the paperwork.

After a sweaty sleepless night I had to wait until 1000 to call to see if my paperwork got there. No not yet. “Wait I hear a truck”. She says has my driver got there. No. “ wait I hear a truck” both trucks show up at the same time.

Now it is Valentine’s Day. As the truck approaches I see a sea of trashed bikes. Looks like they are on the way to a junkyard. My heart sank!

It was a long trailer. At the very end was a bright shiny red and white beauty. The truck stops and this huge biker dude covered in tattoos and piercings jumps out and rolls the valkyrie off the trailer like it was a kids toy.

I’ll never forget his raspy voice as he said ”happy Valentine’s Day”. Lol

This is me that day. First day of owning a Valkyrie

And that is the story of how I got my first Valkyrie.

Almost 20 years and 175K later this is the same bike

Great story Jeff.   cooldude

Both of mine are 22 years old.

Neither is as clean as yours of course.

I wish I aged as well as my bikes do.   Grin

I got a new front tire on (finally).  Got all motivated and changed the oil/filter, then washed it up extra good, and waxed it with the Honda Glare Pro Polish.  I needed to work under my 8 X 8 canopy in front of my bike shed for the steady rain of acorns coming down (from 30-60 feet), and as I was jacking it around for access it got away from me, went over and busted off a hwy peg arm.  (New one already shipped.)  It's never been easy to lift, but this time seemed harder than ever.  The bike isn't any heavier so it must be me.   tickedoff

It was like, you're going up, no I'm not, yes you are, no I'm not. Holy crap is this heavy.

And I realized something.  Not that I've dropped it that often, but every time I lift it, I'm really pissed off.

Which probably helps with the clean and jerk power necessary for the task.

I bought a new 1999 Valkyrie Tourer in ‘99.   It was the fastest color….black.    Rode it 48,000 miles and in 2003 I went to my dealer in Houston for some service work.     While waiting I was browsing around the showroom looking at the new Honda and BMW models and I happened to look outside at the used bike section and low and behold there sets a black 2001 Valkyrie Standard.    I slowly approached it checking it out and it is absolutely in mint condition.  The tires look like brand new and there are no scratches or marks or rust of any kind anywhere.   This bike belonged on the showroom floor.   Getting a little excited…..blood starting to flow a little faster….I look at the speedo.   600 miles on it.   I went inside and asked my salesman what the deal is on a 2 yr old Valkyrie with only 600 miles on it.    Said he sold the bike new to a guy in 2001.  The guy took it home and told his wife “Look what I bought”.   With small kids at home his wife wouldnt let him ride it.   He worked on her for 2 yrs trying to get her to relent….had to sneak in a ride now and again when she wasnt around.  Finally he gave up and brought it back to the dealership.    I told the salesman “lets make a deal.   Brought it home and transfered the Tourer package over from the 99 to the 01 and sold the 99.    I have since been riding the only 01 Valkyrie Tourer that I know of.    Been a great bike….still a great bike.   Now has 106,000+ miles and going strong.

No, the original died. I bought a replacement and a spare. Both are still good, so really it’s on its second

Is there a mileage that a feller showed change out the alternator just for preventive maintenance…..or do mist of you just fix it when it craters?    At 106,000+ miles I am on my second alternator.   At around 75,000 miles I Hit my dead battery with a 200 amp quick jump start charger and it did something to my alternator.    Had to replace it.

I like to remove the alternator at around 50-60K check brushes and blow the dust out
