I have a '99 GL1500C but it did not have an engine guard when I bought it.  I would like to add a Jersey shifter support.  The mounting directions for this show a M8 x 95 flange bolt passing through the engine guard mount, then through a spacer, then into the frame.  Does anyone know if I can safely attach a Jersey support without the engine guard?  I think this could be done if I knew how long the engine guard mount was. The provided spacer plus the guard mount dimension should do it for me. Can anyone give me this length?

I would put the engine guards on your bike before I'd worry about anything else. A drop has the potential to get expensive without them.

Thanks for the advice on the engine guard, but I have a Voyager add-on trike conversion, and there is no chance of a drop.

So,  the shifter support sits 3 1/8” from the frame. Spacer = 1 7/16 and guard tube = 1 11/16”

Thanks for the dimensions.  I agree that without the guard, adequate support may be compromised.  The trouble is that a guard may be difficult to find, especially one in good condition, And if I do locate one, I'm sure it will be way expensive.  I may have to fabricate a brace that extends from the upper guard mounting hole on the frame to the lower mounting hole. I'll have to give this project some serious thought.  It might just not be worth all the time and expense to solve Honda's poor design.

The left I/S guard now goes for almost double the cost of the right one. I got hold of some rashed ones, had a local welder weld up and grind down the damaged areas (which I'll do myself next time...) then off to the platers.

Gulp.

The place I take my stuff for work is considered to be one of the best in the industry but dayum are they expen$ive...

What you might do is to get a damaged left one and cut away the semicircular portion at the point where it joins the rear connection strut. Fabricate and weld a plug into the open potion of the tubing then finish to suit.

Will give you two points of attachment. That should provide enough rigidity for the Jersey part to work.
